Projector Not Connecting to WiFi: Fixes for All Brands

Why Is Your Projector Not Connecting to WiFi?

WiFi connectivity issues are one of the most common complaints with smart projectors. The good news is that most problems follow a short list of causes — and nearly all of them can be fixed at home without a service visit. This guide covers every major fix for Xiaomi, Dangbei, BenQ, Epson, Sony, Hisense, and other popular projector brands.

Step 1: Start with the Basics

  • Restart the projector and your WiFi router — this resolves most temporary connection failures.
  • Make sure you are entering the correct WiFi password. Passwords are case-sensitive. Check by connecting a phone to the same network first.
  • Ensure the projector is within 5–10 metres of the router. Distance and walls weaken the signal significantly.
  • Check if your internet is working on other devices — the issue might be the internet connection, not the projector.

Step 2: Check the WiFi Band (5 GHz vs 2.4 GHz)

Many budget and mid-range projectors only support the 2.4 GHz WiFi band. If your router broadcasts a combined SSID (same name for both bands), the projector may try to connect to 5 GHz and fail. To fix this:

  1. Log into your router admin panel (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1).
  2. Split the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks into separate SSIDs — for example, “HomeWiFi_2.4G” and “HomeWiFi_5G”.
  3. Connect the projector to the 2.4 GHz network specifically.

Models like the Xiaomi Mi Projector 2 Pro, Dangbei Mars Pro, and Hisense Laser TV support both bands. If your projector only supports 2.4 GHz, this step is critical.

Step 3: Forget the Network and Reconnect

  1. Go to Settings → Network → WiFi on the projector.
  2. Select the connected network and choose Forget or Remove.
  3. Search for available networks again and reconnect by entering the password fresh.

Step 4: Check Router Settings

  • MAC address filtering: If your router has MAC filtering enabled, add the projector’s MAC address to the allowed list. Find the MAC address in Settings → Network → About on the projector.
  • DHCP: Ensure DHCP is enabled on your router so the projector can get an IP address automatically.
  • WPA3 security: Some older projectors only support WPA2. Switch your router to WPA2 or WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode if connecting fails.
  • Hidden SSID: If your network is hidden, you may need to enter the network name manually on the projector.

Step 5: Brand-Specific Fixes

Xiaomi / Redmi Projector

If your Xiaomi projector isn’t connecting to WiFi, check the full setup guide for ViewSonic projector setup for general network settings reference. For Xiaomi specifically: go to Settings → Network → Reset Network Settings, then reconnect. Also ensure the projector firmware is updated via Settings → About → Software Update.

Dangbei Projector

Dangbei projectors run a custom Android OS. If WiFi drops frequently, go to Settings → WiFi → Advanced and disable WiFi Sleep Policy (or set it to “Never”). Also clear the WiFi module cache from Settings → Apps → System Apps → WiFi Manager → Clear Cache.

BenQ Smart Projector

BenQ smart projectors (like the EW2480) may fail to connect if the country/region setting mismatches the router’s channel. Go to Settings → System → Region and set it correctly. Also refer to the full Optoma projector setup guide for general smart projector WiFi tips that apply across brands.

Epson Projector

Epson projectors require you to set up WiFi via the Network menu → Wireless LAN → Connection Mode. Select Infrastructure mode and enter your SSID and password manually. Epson projectors support WPA2 but not WPA3 in most models.

Hisense Laser TV

Hisense Laser TVs running VIDAA OS: go to Settings → Support → System Info → Reset Network. This clears saved network profiles. Reconnect via Settings → Network → WiFi. If the issue persists, try a factory reset from Settings → Device Preferences → Reset. Also see the full Hisense laser projector setup guide for additional network configuration tips.

Sony Projector

Sony projectors (VPL series) running Android TV: go to Settings → Network & Internet, select your WiFi, and if it shows “Saved” but won’t connect, forget the network and reconnect. Ensure your Sony projector firmware is up to date via Settings → About → System Update.

Step 6: Factory Reset (Last Resort)

If nothing else works, a factory reset clears all settings including corrupted network profiles. This will erase all apps and preferences.

  1. Go to Settings → System → Factory Reset (location varies by brand).
  2. Confirm the reset and wait for the projector to restart.
  3. Reconnect to WiFi during the initial setup wizard.
