Can You Wash a School Bag in a Washing Machine?
Most fabric and polyester school bags can be machine washed, and it’s the easiest way to get rid of food spills, ink and that lingering smell. Bags with leather trim, rigid plastic frames, hard internal boards or wheels are better cleaned by hand. Check the label, and if it says wipe-clean only, don’t risk the machine.
What You Need
- Mild liquid detergent
- A large mesh laundry bag or pillowcase
- An old toothbrush for pre-cleaning seams and zips
Step-by-Step
- Empty every pocket and shake out crumbs, pencil shavings and loose dirt.
- Remove any detachable metal frame, board or trolley parts.
- Pre-treat stains and scrub grimy zips and seams with the toothbrush.
- Turn the bag inside out if possible, then place it in a mesh laundry bag.
- Select a cold, gentle cycle with a low spin.
- Use a small amount of liquid detergent and run an extra rinse.
What NOT to Do
- Don’t machine wash bags with hard frames, wheels or leather panels.
- Don’t use hot water — it can warp padding and weaken straps.
- Don’t use bleach on coloured or printed bags.
- Don’t tumble dry; heat melts coatings and damages buckles.
Drying Tips
Air dry the bag fully — hang it upside down with all zips and pockets open so water drains and air circulates. Keep it out of direct sun, which fades printed designs. Stuff the main compartment with a dry towel to hold its shape while drying. Make sure it’s completely dry inside before your child packs it again, or it will smell musty.
