How to Use a Toshiba Washing Machine: Operating Guide

A Toshiba washing machine is built to be simple to operate, but knowing how to match the programme, spin speed and temperature to your laundry makes a real difference to how clean and well cared for your clothes come out. This guide walks you through using a Toshiba washing machine from first switch-on, whether you have a front-load or top-load model.

First-Time Setup

Before your first wash, make sure the machine is level on the floor and that any transit bolts at the back have been removed — running a front-loader with the bolts still in place will cause heavy vibration. Connect the inlet hose to the tap, place the drain hose into the standpipe, and plug into an earthed socket. Run one empty cycle on a hot wash with no clothes to flush out the drum before you wash for the first time.

Selecting a Wash Programme

Turn the central dial (or tap the programme button on touch-control models) to choose your cycle. The most useful Toshiba programmes are:

  • Cotton — for towels, bedsheets and sturdy everyday clothes.
  • Daily / Quick Wash — a fast cycle for lightly soiled garments you need in a hurry.
  • Synthetics — for shirts, mixed fabrics and easy-care items.
  • Delicate / Wool — a gentle low-spin cycle for woollens and fragile fabrics.
  • Spin Only / Rinse — to add an extra rinse or re-spin a load.

Setting Spin Speed and Temperature

Higher spin speeds (1000–1200 rpm) wring out more water so clothes dry faster, but use a lower speed for delicates to avoid creasing and stretching. For temperature, 30°C suits everyday loads and saves energy, 40°C handles normal dirt, and 60°C is best for heavily soiled whites, towels and bedding. Always check the care label first.

Loading and Detergent Tips

  • Do not overfill — leave a hand-width of space at the top of the drum so clothes can tumble freely.
  • Use the correct amount of detergent; too much creates excess suds and can trigger an overflow error.
  • Add fabric softener to the marked compartment in the drawer, not directly onto clothes.
  • Close the door firmly until it clicks, or the cycle will not start.

If you are unsure how big a load your machine can take, our washing machine capacity guide by family size will help you load the right amount every time.

Getting the Best Wash

Wipe the door seal dry and leave the door ajar between washes to prevent mould and odours. Clean the detergent drawer and pump filter monthly. If your machine ever stops with a code on the display, our list of Toshiba washing machine error codes and fixes explains what to do. And if the control panel locks up, here is how to unlock the child lock on a Toshiba.
