Best Washing Machine Detergent for Indian Clothes

Why Indian Fabrics Need the Right Detergent

Indian wardrobes are diverse — cotton kurtas, polyester-blend salwar suits, bright printed cottons, silk sarees, woollen shawls and delicate chiffon dupattas all live together. A single “all-purpose” detergent doesn’t serve all of them equally well. Hard water in most Indian cities adds another layer of complexity. Choosing the right detergent for each fabric type keeps colours vibrant, fibres intact and your machine running cleanly.

Best Detergents for Common Indian Fabrics

Cotton Kurtas, Salwar Suits and Everyday Clothes

Cotton is the workhorse of Indian clothing and can handle regular machine washing. For everyday cottons:

  • Ariel Matic Liquid — excellent cleaning power, works well in hard water, low foam for front-loaders
  • Surf Excel Matic Liquid — strong stain removal, widely available, good colour retention
  • Tide Matic Powder — budget-friendly, strong on soil and sweat stains, good for whites

Use the Cotton programme at 30–40°C for lightly soiled kurtas, and 40–60°C for heavily soiled items. Always check our guide on detergent dosing to avoid over-using and leaving residue.

Brightly Coloured and Printed Indian Clothes

Indian printed cottons — block prints, digital prints, Rajasthani mirror work — are prone to fading if washed incorrectly.

  • Surf Excel Easy Wash (for colours) — mild formula that protects bright colours
  • Ariel Colour & Style — colour-protection technology reduces dye bleed
  • Rin Matic for Colours — budget option with reasonable colour care

Always wash printed clothes inside-out on a 30°C gentle cycle. Avoid hot water and long cycles for prints.

Synthetic and Polyester-Blend Fabrics

Synthetic blends (polyester-viscose, nylon, spandex-blend leggings) need a gentle low-foam detergent and a cool wash to prevent pilling and static.

  • Ariel Matic Liquid — safe for synthetics at 30°C
  • Godrej Ezee Liquid Detergent — specifically designed for delicate and synthetic fabrics, very mild

Woollens and Shawls

Merino wool, Pashmina blends and wool-acrylic shawls require a pH-neutral, enzyme-free detergent. Enzymes in standard detergents break down wool fibres.

  • Godrej Ezee — the go-to for woollens in India, enzyme-free and pH-balanced
  • Woolite — international brand available in India, gentle on wool and cashmere

Always use the Delicates or Wool programme and cold water (max 30°C) for woollen items.

Delicates (Sarees, Dupattas, Embroidered Fabrics)

For silk sarees and heavily embroidered pieces, machine washing is risky. For semi-delicates like chiffon, georgette and lightly embroidered cotton:

  • Godrej Ezee or Woolite — ultra-gentle, rinse well, no residue
  • Use the Delicate programme with a net laundry bag for added protection

Detergent Tips for Indian Hard Water

  • Liquid detergents (HE/Matic) generally perform better in hard water than powders.
  • Add a water-softening agent like Calgon to the drum for cities with very hard water.
  • Run a maintenance wash monthly to clear limescale and detergent residue — see our maintenance wash guide.

Dosing for Indian Washing Machines

  • Front-load 6–7 kg: 30–40 ml liquid or 30–35 g powder per full load
  • Top-load 7–8 kg: 40–50 ml liquid or 35–45 g powder per full load
  • Hard water: increase by 10–15%; reduce for soft water or lightly soiled loads
