Xiaomi Mi and Redmi projectors run a locked-down version of Android TV, so the built-in app store hides or blocks many popular apps. “Jailbreaking” a Xiaomi projector simply means unlocking it so you can sideload any APK you want — including Netflix, Prime Video, and other apps that refuse to install the normal way. No root or warranty-voiding hacks are needed; you just change a few settings.
What You Will Need
- Your Xiaomi projector connected to WiFi
- A USB flash drive, or a file-manager app (ES File Explorer or X-plore)
- The APK files you want to install (downloaded from a trusted source like APKMirror)
- An air mouse or USB keyboard (optional, but makes typing far easier)
Step 1: Enable Unknown Sources
- Open Settings from the home screen.
- Go to Device Preferences > Security & Restrictions.
- Turn on Unknown sources (toggle it for your chosen file manager or browser).
This single step is what unlocks the projector to accept apps from outside the store.
Step 2: Install a File Manager
Open the Xiaomi app store and install X-plore File Manager or ES File Explorer. You need a file manager to open APK files copied from a USB drive or downloaded directly.
Step 3: Sideload Your APKs
- Copy your APK files onto a USB drive from a PC, then plug the drive into the projector.
- Open the file manager, browse to the USB drive, and select the APK.
- Confirm Install when prompted.
- Repeat for each app — Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar, or anything else.
Getting Netflix and Prime Video Working
Netflix often refuses to play on uncertified devices. Install the Android TV version of the Netflix APK, and if it still won’t open, use a sideloaded app like Smart YouTube TV or a Fire TV Stick for protected content. Prime Video usually works straight after sideloading.
Troubleshooting
- “App not installed”: the APK is the phone version — download the Android TV build instead.
- App installs but the remote won’t navigate: use an air mouse to tap on-screen buttons.
- Black screen on Netflix: the device isn’t Widevine L1 certified; use an external streaming stick.
