How to Set Up Xiaomi Projector: Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Why This Guide Exists

Xiaomi projectors — whether the Mi Smart Compact Projector, Redmi Projector, or the Wanbo series sold under Xiaomi’s ecosystem — are among the most popular budget-to-mid-range projectors in India. But out of the box, the setup can feel confusing: the remote is minimal, the Android TV interface needs configuration, and the focus/keystone controls are often buried in menus. This guide walks you through everything from unboxing to watching your first movie.

What You Need Before You Start

  • Your Xiaomi projector and power adapter
  • A flat, stable surface or ceiling/wall mount
  • A white wall or projector screen (at least 80 inches recommended)
  • Your home WiFi password (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz)
  • A Google account (for the Play Store or app sideloading)
  • HDMI cable or USB-C adapter (optional, for wired connections)

Step-by-Step Setup Guide

Step 1: Unbox and Position the Projector

Remove the projector, remote, power cable, and any included HDMI cable from the box. Place the projector on a stable surface, pointing toward a white wall or screen. For the best image, the projection surface should be at least 1.5 to 3 metres away depending on your model — check the throw ratio in the manual. Keep the lens parallel to the wall to minimise keystone distortion.

Step 2: Power On and Pair the Remote

Plug in the power cable and press the power button. Most Xiaomi projectors auto-pair the Bluetooth remote on first boot. If the remote does not respond, hold the Home and Back buttons together for 3 seconds to force pair. Insert AAA batteries if not pre-installed.

Step 3: Adjust Focus and Keystone

On most Mi projectors, focus is controlled by a physical dial or ring on the lens. Turn it slowly until text on the welcome screen is sharp. Keystone correction (fixing the trapezoidal distortion when the projector is angled) is done digitally via Settings. Go to Settings > Projection > Keystone Correction and adjust the sliders. Some models support auto-keystone — enable it if available.

Step 4: Connect to WiFi

The setup wizard will prompt you to choose a WiFi network. Select your network, enter the password, and wait for the connection to confirm. If you skip this step during setup, go to Settings > Network > WiFi later. For a detailed walkthrough of WiFi setup and troubleshooting, see our guide on how to set up an Android projector.

Step 5: Sign In to Google Account

After WiFi is connected, the projector will prompt you to sign in with a Google account. This is required to access the Google Play Store on models that support it. Use the on-screen keyboard with the remote, or pair a Bluetooth keyboard for faster input. On some Xiaomi models that use a custom MIUI TV OS, you may sign in via the Mi account instead.

Step 6: Install Apps

Open the app store (Google Play or the Xiaomi app store depending on your model). Search for and install YouTube, MX Player, or any other streaming apps you prefer. Note that Netflix is not directly available on all Xiaomi projectors due to certification restrictions — for a full guide on getting Netflix and other apps working, read our post on connecting your phone to a projector.

Step 7: Tune Picture Settings

Go to Settings > Picture and select a mode: Cinema mode gives warmer, more natural colours; Vivid mode is brighter for well-lit rooms. Adjust brightness and contrast to suit your environment. Lower the brightness in dark rooms to reduce eye strain and improve black levels.

Common Problems and Fixes

Projector won’t connect to WiFi

Make sure you are entering the password correctly (passwords are case-sensitive). Try switching from 5 GHz to 2.4 GHz — some Xiaomi models only support 2.4 GHz. If the network still doesn’t show up, restart your router and retry.

Image is blurry even after focusing

Check that the projection distance matches the recommended range for your model. If the projector is too close or too far, the focus ring may not be able to compensate. Also clean the lens with a soft, dry cloth — dust and fingerprints dramatically affect sharpness.

Remote not working

Re-pair the remote by holding Home + Back for 3 seconds. Replace batteries if the LED on the remote is dim or not lighting up. Ensure there are no obstructions between the remote and the projector’s IR sensor.

No sound from projector

Go to Settings > Sound and make sure the volume is not muted and the output is set to the built-in speakers. If using HDMI input, check that the source device’s audio output is not set to a different device.

Tips for the Best Viewing Experience

  • Use a dedicated projector screen rather than a painted wall — even a basic pull-down screen dramatically improves contrast and colour accuracy.
  • Darken the room as much as possible; Xiaomi projectors typically produce 300–700 ANSI lumens, which is best enjoyed in low-light conditions.
  • Use a Bluetooth speaker if the built-in audio feels weak — most Xiaomi projectors support Bluetooth audio output.
  • Keep the projector firmware updated via Settings > About > System Update to get performance improvements and bug fixes.
