How to Use AC Sleep Mode Effectively

What Is AC Sleep Mode and How Does It Work?

AC Sleep mode is a built-in feature that gradually raises the set temperature by 1°C per hour while you sleep, up to a maximum increase of 2–3°C, then holds at that temperature. It works on the principle that your body temperature drops naturally during sleep, so you need less cooling after the first hour or two in bed. The result: better sleep quality and 10–15% lower overnight electricity use.

Why Use Sleep Mode?

  • Saves electricity — the compressor runs less as the target temperature is slightly higher
  • Prevents over-cooling — waking up cold at 3 AM is a common complaint from people who skip sleep mode
  • Reduces noise — most ACs lower the fan speed in sleep mode, making the unit quieter at night
  • Reduces dry air — less aggressive cooling means less moisture removed from bedroom air

How to Set Sleep Mode: Samsung, LG, and Daikin

Samsung AC Sleep Mode

  1. Point the remote at the indoor unit.
  2. Press the “Sleep” button (moon icon on the remote).
  3. The display shows “Sleep” or a moon icon, confirming it is active.
  4. Samsung Sleep mode raises the temperature by 1°C after the first hour, then another 1°C after the second hour, and holds.
  5. To cancel, press the Sleep button again or turn the AC off and on.

LG AC Sleep Mode

  1. Press the “Sleep” or “Good Sleep” button on the LG remote.
  2. LG models typically offer 1-hour, 2-hour, or 7-hour sleep durations — select your preference.
  3. The temperature rises gradually in cooling mode, or drops gradually in heating mode.
  4. The AC shuts off automatically at the end of the sleep duration on some models.

Daikin AC Sleep Mode

  1. Press the “Powerful” or “Econo” button — Daikin models vary by generation.
  2. On remotes with a dedicated sleep button (newer Daikin models), press it once to activate.
  3. Daikin sleep mode raises the set temperature by 2°C over 2 hours, then holds.
  4. Pair sleep mode with the Timer function to have the AC switch off 1–2 hours after you fall asleep for maximum savings.

Best Settings for Sleep Mode

  • Start temperature: 24–26°C (the mode will raise it to 26–28°C over 2 hours)
  • Fan speed: Auto (the AC adjusts automatically)
  • Mode: Cool or Auto
  • Combine with Timer: Set the AC to switch off 5–6 hours after bedtime if you sleep in an insulated room

Tips for Better Sleep with AC

  • Use a ceiling fan alongside the AC — better air circulation means you feel cooler even at a higher temperature setting.
  • Close the bedroom door to maintain temperature in a smaller space.
  • Use light cotton bedding rather than heavy materials — your body stays cooler naturally.
  • If you wake up cold in the night, increase the start temperature by 1°C the next night.
