How to Service an AC at Home: DIY Filter Cleaning Guide

How to Service an AC at Home: What You Can Do Without a Technician

A basic AC service at home takes about 20–30 minutes and involves cleaning the air filter, wiping down the indoor unit, and clearing any blockage from the drain pipe. You do not need tools or professional training to do this — just a gentle touch and some clean water. Regular DIY cleaning keeps your AC cooling efficiently and extends its life.

What You Will Need

  • Soft brush or dry cloth
  • Running water (for filter rinsing)
  • White vinegar or mild bleach solution (for drain cleaning)
  • Small cup or spray bottle
  • Step stool if the indoor unit is mounted high

How to Clean a Split AC Filter (Step by Step)

Step 1: Switch Off the AC

Switch off the AC using the remote and then turn it off at the wall socket or MCB. Never open the unit while the AC is running.

Step 2: Open the Front Panel

Lift or pull open the front cover of the indoor unit. On most split ACs, the cover hinges upward. You will see the air filters — usually two mesh panels sitting in front of the evaporator coil.

Step 3: Remove the Filters

Slide the filters out gently. They clip or slide into grooves — no tools needed. Hold them over a bin and tap gently to remove loose dust.

Step 4: Rinse Under Running Water

Hold the filters under a cold or lukewarm tap and rinse away the dust. Do not scrub hard — the mesh is delicate. If the filter has stubborn grease (common in kitchen-adjacent rooms), a gentle dish soap rinse works well. Rinse the soap off completely.

Step 5: Allow to Dry Completely

Shake off excess water and allow the filters to air-dry in the shade for 30–45 minutes. Never reinstall wet filters — moisture inside the unit promotes mould and bacteria growth.

Step 6: Wipe the Indoor Unit Casing

Use a dry cloth to wipe the outer casing of the indoor unit. Wipe the return air grille (the slot the filters sit behind) to remove any dust that has accumulated there.

Step 7: Clear the Condensate Drain

Pour a diluted white vinegar solution (equal parts vinegar and water) or a mild bleach solution into the drain tray — the shallow plastic tray visible behind the filters. This prevents algae build-up in the drain pipe that causes water leakage inside the room.

Step 8: Reinstall Filters and Close the Unit

Slide the clean, dry filters back into their grooves and close the front panel. Restore power and run the AC normally.

How to Clean a Window AC Filter

  1. Unplug the window AC from the socket.
  2. Pull off the front grille — it usually clips on and pulls straight out.
  3. Slide out the filter mesh.
  4. Rinse under running water and allow to dry completely.
  5. Reinstall grille and plug back in.

How Often Should You Clean the AC Filter?

  • Every 2–3 weeks during peak summer use (March to June in most of India).
  • Once a month during light use (monsoon and winter).
  • More often if you have pets, live near a road, or the room gets dusty quickly.

What a Professional Service Covers (That You Cannot Do at Home)

  • Evaporator coil deep clean with foam cleaner
  • Condenser coil cleaning (outdoor unit)
  • Refrigerant pressure check
  • Electrical connection inspection
  • Drain pipe jetting

Schedule a professional service once a year before summer — it keeps the AC running at full efficiency and can catch problems before they become expensive repairs.
