Why Your Whirlpool Washing Machine Needs Regular Cleaning
Washing machines get dirty — detergent residue, fabric softener buildup, hard water minerals, and moisture all combine to create the ideal environment for mould, mildew, and bacteria. A machine that smells musty is a common sign that the drum, gasket, and detergent drawer need attention. Regular cleaning keeps your machine performing optimally and extends its life.
Recommended: Affresh Washing Machine Cleaner
Affresh is Whirlpool’s own-brand washing machine cleaner — specifically formulated to break down the detergent and mineral buildup that causes odour and residue inside the drum.
How to use Affresh:
- Do not add any clothes to the drum.
- Place one Affresh tablet directly in the drum (not the detergent drawer).
- Select the Clean Washer cycle (or Hot/Cotton at 60°C+ if your machine doesn’t have a dedicated cycle).
- Press Start and let the full cycle run.
- After the cycle, wipe the inside of the drum with a dry cloth.
- Leave the door open to air dry.
Use once a month, or whenever you notice musty smells.
Affresh is available at Amazon India and most appliance stores (₹300–₹600 for a pack of 3 tablets). Other brands like Bosch Clean Machine and Perk also work in Whirlpool machines.
The Built-In “Clean Washer” Cycle
Most Whirlpool fully automatic washing machines made after 2015 have a dedicated Clean Washer or Drum Clean cycle. Look for it on the cycle selector dial or programme buttons.
This cycle runs hot water (usually 60–90°C) with an extended wash time and high drum agitation specifically designed to clean the drum interior, not wash clothes.
How often to run it: Every 30 cycles, or when the machine prompts you (many Whirlpool models display a “Clean Washer” reminder after 30 washes).
DIY: Vinegar and Baking Soda Method
A cost-effective alternative that works well for regular maintenance.
For front-loaders:
- Add 2 cups of white vinegar to the detergent drawer (main wash compartment).
- Run on the hottest cycle available (60°C or above).
- When the cycle finishes, add ½ cup of baking soda directly to the drum.
- Run a second hot cycle.
- Wipe the drum dry with a clean cloth.
For top-loaders:
- Set to the largest load and hottest water setting.
- Start the machine and let the drum fill with water.
- Add 4 cups of white vinegar to the water.
- Let the machine agitate for 1 minute, then pause the cycle.
- Let soak for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
- Resume the cycle and let it complete.
- Run another hot cycle with 1 cup of baking soda added at the start.
Cleaning Other Parts of the Whirlpool Washer
Door Gasket (Front-Loaders)
The rubber seal around the door is a prime location for black mould growth. Wipe monthly:
- Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle.
- Spray the gasket thoroughly, including inside the fold.
- Wipe with a damp cloth. Use an old toothbrush for mould in the fold.
- For severe mould: apply a small amount of diluted bleach (1:10 with water), wait 5 minutes, wipe and rinse.
Detergent Drawer
Remove the drawer (press the release tab and pull out completely). Rinse under warm water. Scrub all compartments with a toothbrush to remove detergent and softener residue. Rinse the drawer housing inside the machine. Allow to dry, then reinsert.
Pump Filter (Front-Loaders)
Locate the filter behind the small panel at the bottom-front of the machine. Place a tray to catch water, unscrew slowly, remove debris, rinse filter, screw back in. Clean every 3 months.
Drum Paddle (Top-Loaders)
The plastic paddles on the drum walls can accumulate detergent residue. Wipe with a damp cloth during your monthly cleaning routine.
Monthly Whirlpool Washing Machine Maintenance Schedule
| Task | Frequency | Time Required |
|---|---|---|
| Run Clean Washer / Drum Clean cycle | Monthly | 1–2 hours (machine running) |
| Wipe door gasket | Monthly (or after each wash) | 5 minutes |
| Clean detergent drawer | Monthly | 10 minutes |
| Clean pump filter (front-loaders) | Every 3 months | 10 minutes |
| Wipe drum interior with dry cloth | After every wash (optional) | 2 minutes |
| Leave door ajar after washing | Every time | 0 minutes |
Preventing Odour: The Most Important Habits
- Always leave the front-loader door slightly open after a wash — air circulation prevents mildew
- Remove wet laundry promptly — never leave wet clothes in the drum for more than 30 minutes
- Use HE detergent and the recommended dose — excess detergent is the #1 cause of drum odour
- Avoid using fabric softener in every wash — it builds up in the drum and can cause odours
