Samsung Washing Machine Door Not Opening: Fix

Samsung Washing Machine Door Not Opening

Samsung front-load washing machine doors lock automatically during a cycle for safety. Once the cycle ends and the drum stops spinning, the door should release within 1–3 minutes. When it does not open, the cause is almost always one of a small number of identifiable issues, most of which you can resolve yourself.

Quick Answer

Wait 1–3 minutes after the cycle ends. If still locked: check for residual water, try a power off/on reset, check for child lock, and as a last resort use the emergency door release inside the filter panel.

Causes and Fixes

1. Interlock Thermal Delay

Samsung uses a bi-metal strip in its door interlock that requires a short cool-down after the cycle ends. This is normal and not a fault.

  1. Wait 2–3 minutes after the cycle end beep.
  2. Press the door gently and pull the handle — do not force it.

2. Water Still in the Drum

Samsung machines keep the door locked when residual water is detected. This is a safety feature to prevent flooding.

  1. Look through the door glass — is water visible?
  2. Select Spin Only or Drain cycle and press Start.
  3. Wait for the full drain cycle to complete.
  4. If drainage is failing, clean the pump filter (bottom-right panel) following our drum and filter cleaning guide.

3. Child Lock Active

Samsung’s child lock feature prevents both button inputs and door opening. A padlock icon on the display indicates child lock is on. See the full guide to how to turn off child lock on Samsung washing machines.

4. Power Failure During Cycle

If the power went off mid-cycle, the door interlock may remain engaged when power returns.

  1. Switch the machine off at the wall socket, wait 30 seconds and switch it back on.
  2. Select a Rinse and Spin or Drain programme and let it complete fully.

5. dE Error (Door Error) Displayed

A dE error on the display means Samsung’s control board is detecting a door fault. This can happen if clothing is caught in the door seal or the interlock hook is misaligned.

  1. Press the door firmly shut and check the rubber seal for trapped fabric.
  2. Press Start — if dE clears and the programme runs normally, it was a soft latch issue.
  3. If dE persists after the cycle, the door interlock module likely needs replacement.

6. Emergency Door Release

All Samsung front-loaders have an emergency release mechanism inside the pump filter panel (bottom of machine).

  1. Switch off and unplug the machine.
  2. Open the bottom filter panel.
  3. Look for a small orange or yellow loop/cord — pull it downward to manually release the door latch.
  4. The door will open. Do not pull the cord with a full drum of water — drain first using the small emergency drain hose also in the panel.

Prevention

  • Clean the door rubber seal weekly — trapped dirt can stop the door from seating properly.
  • Clean the drain filter monthly to prevent water retention that triggers the locked door.
  • For Samsung-specific error codes like dE, refer to the child lock and control guide and check the Samsung SmartThings app for diagnostic reports if your model supports it.

When to Call a Technician

Call Samsung service (1800-5-726-7864) if the dE error persists across multiple cycles, if the emergency cord does not release the door, or if the door handle feels broken or the latch hook is visibly damaged.
