Panasonic Washing Machine Not Draining: Causes and Fixes

When a Panasonic washing machine finishes a cycle but leaves dirty water sitting in the drum, the drainage system is blocked or struggling somewhere. The good news is that most draining problems come from a clogged filter or a kinked hose — both of which you can fix yourself in minutes. This guide explains why a Panasonic washing machine will not drain and how to fix it step by step.

1. Blocked Pump Filter

The drain pump filter is the number-one cause of poor draining. It traps coins, buttons, lint and hair to protect the pump, and over time it clogs.

Fix:

  1. Switch off and unplug the machine.
  2. Open the small flap at the front-bottom and place a towel and shallow tray underneath — water will spill out.
  3. Unscrew the filter slowly, let the water drain, and remove any debris.
  4. Rinse the filter under a tap, screw it back firmly, and run a test cycle.

2. Kinked or Badly Positioned Drain Hose

A drain hose that is bent, crushed behind the machine, or pushed too far down the standpipe will stop water leaving properly.

Fix: Pull the machine out gently and straighten the hose. Make sure the hose end sits at the correct height (usually 60–100 cm) and is not jammed deep into the drain, which can cause a siphon effect.

3. Clogged Standpipe or Drain

If the household drain or standpipe itself is blocked, water cannot go anywhere.

Fix: Disconnect the drain hose and check whether water flows freely down the standpipe. Clear any blockage in the drain before reconnecting.

4. Faulty Drain Pump

If the filter and hose are clear but the machine still will not drain — and you hear a humming but no water movement — the drain pump itself may have failed or jammed.

Fix: A jammed pump impeller can sometimes be freed by removing debris through the filter opening. A failed pump needs replacing by a technician.

5. Error Code or Glitch

A drainage fault often shows as a code on the display. Switch off, unplug for two minutes and restart. If a code remains, check our list of Panasonic washing machine error codes and fixes to identify the exact problem.

When to Call a Technician

If the filter, hose and standpipe are all clear but draining still fails, the pump or control board likely needs professional attention — especially worthwhile while the machine is under warranty.

If repairs no longer make sense on an older machine, a replacement may be the smarter choice.
