LG Washing Machine Door Not Opening After a Wash
An LG washing machine door that will not open after a cycle has finished is a common frustration. The door interlock (door lock mechanism) on LG front-loaders keeps the door sealed during a wash and should release once the cycle is complete and the drum is no longer spinning. When it does not, one of several causes is usually to blame.
Quick Answer
Wait 2–3 minutes after the cycle ends — the interlock has a thermal delay. If still locked, check for residual water in the drum, try a power cycle, and as a last resort use the emergency door release cord inside the filter access panel.
Causes and Fixes
1. Thermal Door Interlock Delay
LG door interlocks contain a thermistor that physically holds the latch until it cools. Even after the cycle ends, the door may stay locked for 1–3 minutes.
- Wait 2–3 minutes after the end-of-cycle beep.
- Try pulling the door handle gently — do not yank it.
2. Water Remaining in the Drum
If the drain cycle did not complete, the LG machine will keep the door locked as a safety measure — you would otherwise open a drum full of water.
- Check whether you can see or hear water inside the drum.
- Select a Drain or Spin cycle on the programme dial and press Start.
- Once the drum is empty, the door should unlock automatically.
- If the machine will not drain, see how to clean the drum and drain filter — a blocked filter is often the cause.
3. Power Cut or Machine in Standby
If the power went off mid-cycle or the machine switched off, the interlock may remain engaged without power to release it.
- Turn the machine off at the wall, wait 30 seconds and turn it back on.
- Select a short programme (Spin or Drain) and press Start.
- Once complete, the door should open.
4. Child Lock Active
Child lock prevents the door from being opened as well as the buttons from being pressed. Check for a key or padlock icon on the display. See the guide on how to turn off child lock on LG washing machines.
5. Emergency Door Release
LG front-loaders have an emergency release cord (orange or red) behind the pump filter access panel at the bottom of the machine. Use this only when other methods fail.
- Ensure the machine is switched off and unplugged.
- Place towels on the floor to catch any water.
- Open the bottom panel and pull the small orange/red cord downward firmly.
- The door will release. Do not use this with a full drum of water.
6. Faulty Door Interlock
If the door opens with the emergency cord but immediately locks again on the next cycle (or will not unlock at all using any method), the door interlock module has failed and needs replacement.
Prevention
- Never force the door handle — it can snap the interlock bracket.
- Keep the door seal clean and free of debris. Clean the drum and filter monthly.
- If the drain filter is frequently blocked, clothes may leave residual water that triggers this issue repeatedly. Learn about the right capacity for your wash loads.
When to Call a Technician
If the emergency cord does not open the door, or if the interlock module needs replacement, call LG service on 1800-315-9999. Do not attempt to disassemble the door latch mechanism yourself — this can damage the door and void the warranty.
