How to Wash a Jacket in a Washing Machine

Can You Wash a Jacket in a Washing Machine?

It depends on the jacket. Cotton, denim, fleece, puffer and most down jackets can be machine washed if the label allows. Leather, suede, wool overcoats and anything labelled dry-clean only should stay out of the machine. Always read the care tag first — the method changes a lot between a denim jacket and a down-filled puffer.

What You Need

  • Mild liquid detergent (a down-specific wash for down jackets)
  • A laundry bag for jackets with straps or trims
  • Clean tennis balls for drying puffers

Step-by-Step

  1. Empty all pockets and close zips, Velcro and buttons.
  2. Turn the jacket inside out and spot-treat any collar or cuff stains.
  3. Choose the cycle by type: denim and cotton on a cold gentle cycle; down and puffer on a delicate cold cycle with a down or mild detergent.
  4. Use a small amount of liquid detergent and run an extra rinse.
  5. Use a low spin speed to protect the fabric and filling.
  6. Wash one or two jackets at a time so they tumble freely.

What NOT to Do

  • Don’t machine wash leather, suede or wool coats.
  • Don’t use hot water — it can shrink shells and damage waterproof coatings.
  • Don’t use fabric softener on technical or waterproof jackets.
  • Don’t air dry a down jacket without breaking up the clumps.

Drying Tips

Cotton and denim jackets air dry well on a hanger, away from direct sun. Down and puffer jackets must be tumble dried on low heat with a few clean tennis balls — the balls break up the clumped filling and restore loft. Pause and fluff the jacket by hand every 20–30 minutes until completely dry, or the down can stay damp inside and smell.
