How to Wash Gym Clothes in a Washing Machine (Remove Odour)

Why Gym Clothes Keep Smelling

Activewear is made of synthetic fabrics that trap sweat, oils and odour-causing bacteria deep in the fibres. Regular washing often doesn’t fully remove that smell, and fabric softener actually makes it worse by coating the fabric and sealing in bacteria. The fix is a cold wash, inside out, with a vinegar pre-soak — and absolutely no softener.

What You Need

  • Mild liquid detergent
  • White vinegar for soaking and rinsing
  • A mesh laundry bag for items with hooks or drawstrings

Step-by-Step

  1. Don’t leave sweaty clothes balled up in your bag — air them out first.
  2. Turn everything inside out so the sweaty side faces the water.
  3. Pre-soak in cold water with half a cup of white vinegar for 20–30 minutes.
  4. Wash on a cold, normal cycle with a moderate amount of liquid detergent.
  5. Add half a cup of vinegar to the rinse to neutralise odour.
  6. Don’t overload — clothes need room to rinse the bacteria away.

What NOT to Do

  • Don’t use fabric softener — it traps odour in synthetic fibres.
  • Don’t use hot water; it can set smells and damage stretch fabrics.
  • Don’t use too much detergent — residue holds bacteria.
  • Don’t leave washed clothes sitting wet in the drum.

Drying Tips

Air dry gym clothes in a well-ventilated spot, ideally in sunlight — UV helps kill remaining bacteria. Avoid high heat in the dryer, which breaks down elastane and shortens the life of your activewear. Make sure items are completely dry before storing, as any damp spot will smell again quickly.

Useful Reads & Where to Shop

Cold washing protects stretchy fabric the same way it helps when washing black clothes. Lingering smells often come from the machine itself, so it’s worth knowing how to clean the drum and filter.
