Before You Start: Sort Your Laundry
Sorting takes 2 minutes and prevents colour bleed, fabric damage, and uneven washing. Sort into these groups:
- Whites: White shirts, underwear, socks — wash at higher temperatures (40–60°C)
- Lights: Pastels, light grey, light yellow — wash at 30–40°C
- Darks: Black, navy, dark grey, dark colours — wash at 30°C to prevent fading
- Delicates: Silk, lace, wool, embroidered items — use Delicate/Hand Wash cycle
- Heavy items: Towels, jeans, bed sheets — wash separately from lighter fabrics
Colour bleed warning: New coloured items (especially reds and dark blues) bleed in the first few washes. Wash them separately the first 2–3 times.
Check the Clothing Care Labels
Every garment has a care label inside with washing symbols. The most important ones:
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Tub with water (no markings) | Machine wash, any temperature |
| Tub with hand | Hand wash only |
| Circle with X | Do not wash (dry clean only) |
| 30°, 40°, 60° | Maximum wash temperature |
| Single line under tub | Permanent press cycle |
| Double line under tub | Delicate/gentle cycle |
How to Load the Washing Machine
Front-Load Washing Machines
- Open the door (it swings outward from a handle on the right side).
- Load clothes loosely into the drum. Never pack tightly.
- Fill to 3/4 of drum capacity — leave room for clothes to tumble freely.
- Close the door firmly until it clicks (front-loaders lock during operation).
Top-Load Washing Machines
- Open the lid.
- Add clothes before adding water or detergent (for most top-loaders).
- Distribute clothes evenly around the agitator or tub — uneven loads cause vibration and “UE” (unbalanced) errors.
- Don’t wrap clothes around the agitator.
- Fill to 3/4 capacity maximum.
Choosing the Right Detergent
| Machine Type | Detergent to Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Front-load (fully automatic) | HE (High Efficiency) liquid or powder — e.g., Ariel Matic Front Load, Surf Excel Matic | Front-loaders use less water — regular detergent creates too many suds that won’t rinse out |
| Top-load (fully automatic) | HE top-load detergent — e.g., Ariel Matic Top Load, Tide Matic | Formulated for top-loader drum action |
| Semi-automatic | Regular detergent powder — e.g., Surf Excel, Wheel, Tide Powder | Manual rinse, regular detergent is fine |
How much detergent: Use the measuring cap/scoop. Most people use too much — excess detergent leaves residue on clothes and inside the machine. Use the minimum recommended amount.
Where to Add Detergent
- Front-loaders: In the detergent drawer (pull out the tray). The compartment marked I is for pre-wash (optional). The compartment marked II is for the main wash. The flower/softener symbol compartment is for fabric conditioner.
- Top-loaders (most models): Add detergent directly into the drum before adding clothes, or use the detergent compartment if your model has one.
- Liquid detergent pods: Place in the drum directly with clothes (not in the drawer).
Selecting the Right Wash Cycle
| Cycle | Best For | Temp/Speed |
|---|---|---|
| Cotton / Normal | Everyday clothes, cotton, linen | 40°C, high spin |
| Quick Wash (15–30 min) | Lightly soiled clothes, worn once | 30°C, medium spin |
| Delicate / Hand Wash | Silk, lace, wool, embroidered items | 30°C, low spin |
| Synthetics | Polyester, nylon, activewear | 40°C, medium spin |
| Heavy Duty | Heavily soiled items, workwear, jeans | 60°C, high spin |
| Bedding / Bulky | Sheets, duvets, blankets | 60°C, adapted drum motion |
| Rinse + Spin | Items that just need rinsing, or after hand washing | Cold, high spin |
| Spin Only | Remove excess water from pre-washed items | No water, high spin |
Temperature Guide
- 30°C: Delicates, dark colours, lightly soiled items. Most energy-efficient.
- 40°C: Everyday cotton, shirts, most normal laundry. Good balance of cleaning and care.
- 60°C: Whites, towels, bedding, heavily soiled items. Kills bacteria and dust mites.
- 90°C: Heavily stained whites, cloth nappies. High energy use — only when necessary.
Starting the Machine
- Ensure the water supply tap is open.
- Close the door (front-load) or lid (top-load).
- Select your programme/cycle.
- Select temperature and spin speed (or use the programme defaults).
- Press Start.
- The machine fills with water, tumbles/agitates, drains, rinses, and spins automatically.
After the Cycle: What to Do
- Remove clothes promptly — leaving wet clothes in a front-loader for hours causes mildew smell.
- Leave the front-loader door slightly ajar after each wash to let the drum dry out.
- Wipe the door gasket dry to prevent mould growth.
- Clean the detergent drawer monthly (remove and rinse under warm water).
- Clean the pump filter every 3 months (front-loaders — small door at the bottom front).
- Run a drum clean/self-clean cycle monthly (most machines have this as a dedicated cycle).
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using regular detergent in a front-loader (creates excessive suds)
- Overloading the drum (poor cleaning, increased wear on bearings)
- Leaving wet clothes in the drum (mildew, smell)
- Never cleaning the pump filter (causes drain failures)
- Washing delicates on Normal/Cotton cycle (damages fabric)
- Not checking pockets (coins and metal objects damage the drum and pump)
