Resetting a Toshiba washing machine clears temporary glitches, cancels a cycle you started by mistake, and often makes an error code disappear. It is the first thing to try whenever the machine behaves oddly — freezing mid-wash, refusing to start, or flashing a code. This guide shows you how to reset a Toshiba washing machine step by step.
Method 1: Power Reset (Works for Most Problems)
A power reset clears the machine’s memory and is the safest first step:
- Press the power button to switch the machine off.
- Unplug it from the wall socket, or switch off the socket.
- Wait a full 1 to 2 minutes — this lets the control board fully discharge.
- Plug back in and switch on.
- Select your programme and press Start again.
This simple cycle resolves the majority of one-off faults and sensor hiccups.
Method 2: Cancelling a Running Cycle
If you only want to stop or change the current wash without unplugging:
- Press and hold the Start/Pause button for about 3 seconds to pause the cycle.
- To cancel completely, press and hold the Power button until the machine turns off, then switch back on.
- If water remains in the drum, select a Drain or Spin programme to empty it before opening the door.
Method 3: Clearing an Error Code
When a code appears on the display, first address the underlying cause — check the door, the inlet tap and the drain filter. Then perform the power reset in Method 1. Most codes will not return once the actual problem is fixed. Our full list of Toshiba washing machine error codes and their fixes tells you what each code means before you reset.
If the Reset Does Not Work
- Make sure the door is fully closed — a door that is not latched stops the machine starting.
- Check the power socket is working by testing another appliance.
- If the same error returns immediately after every reset, the fault is likely mechanical or electronic and needs a technician, particularly if the machine is under warranty.
Sometimes a frozen panel is simply the child lock being active. If buttons will not respond, see how to unlock the child lock on a Toshiba washing machine.
If repeated resets and repairs are not keeping an older machine going, it may be time for a replacement.
