What Is HE Detergent?
HE stands for High Efficiency. HE detergents are specially formulated for front-load and high-efficiency top-load washing machines that use less water per cycle than traditional agitator machines. You’ll spot the HE symbol — a small “HE” inside a circle — on the bottle.
HE detergents produce very low suds. That might sound counterintuitive, but it’s exactly what modern machines need. A front-load drum tumbles clothes through a shallow pool of water rather than submerging them, so excessive foam interferes with the wash action and is hard to rinse out.
What Is Regular (Standard) Detergent?
Regular or conventional detergents were designed for older top-load machines with a central agitator that filled with large amounts of water. They produce much higher suds — fine for those machines, but a problem in an HE washer.
Key Differences at a Glance
- Suds level: HE = low foam; regular = high foam
- Water usage: HE detergents rinse cleanly with less water
- Concentration: HE detergents are more concentrated — you use less per load
- Cost per wash: HE can be slightly more expensive per bottle but more economical per load
- Compatibility: HE detergent works in both HE and traditional machines; regular detergent should not be used in HE machines
Why Using the Wrong Detergent Damages Your Machine
Using regular detergent in a front-load HE machine causes several problems:
- Excess suds: The machine cannot rinse out all the foam, leaving residue on clothes and inside the drum.
- SUD errors: Most modern front-loaders detect excess foam and pause or abort the cycle (Samsung SUD, LG UE errors).
- Mould and odour: Detergent residue left in the rubber door seal and drum creates the ideal environment for mould and that musty smell.
- Pump strain: Foam can block the drain pump and damage internal components over time.
If your machine smells or leaves white marks on clothes, switching to HE detergent and running a monthly maintenance wash is usually the fix.
How to Choose the Right HE Detergent for Indian Homes
- Hard water areas (Delhi, Bengaluru, Rajasthan): Look for HE detergents with water-softening agents or use a half-measure of descaler alongside.
- Front-load machines: Always use HE-labelled liquid or powder detergent. Liquid dissolves more easily in cool water.
- Top-load fully automatic: Check your manual. Many modern top-loaders (Samsung, LG Inverter) are also HE machines and require low-foam detergent.
- Semi-automatic top-loaders: These use more water and can handle regular detergent.

Dosing Tips
- Use the amount marked on the HE detergent cap — typically 30–40 ml for a standard load in a front-loader.
- Hard water may need a slightly higher dose; soft water needs less.
- Never exceed the MAX line in the detergent drawer.
- For lightly soiled loads, reduce the dose by 25% to avoid residue build-up.
Top HE Detergent Options for Indian Machines
Some popular HE-compatible detergents available in India include Ariel Matic, Surf Excel Matic, Tide Matic and Henko Stain Care — all labelled specifically for fully automatic washing machines. Avoid standard Wheel, Ghadi or generic powders in your front-loader.

Quick Answer
If your washing machine is a fully automatic front-loader or a modern inverter top-loader, always use a detergent labelled HE or Matic. It protects your machine, keeps clothes residue-free and prevents the mould that causes bad odours. Regular detergent will work in a pinch in a traditional top-loader, but never the other way around.
