How to Install Apps on Dangbei Projector (Sideload APK)

Why Sideload Apps on a Dangbei Projector?

Dangbei projectors run Android TV or a custom Dangbei OS, both of which come with access to the Google Play Store. However, certain apps — most notably Netflix — are not listed in the Play Store on projectors because the device lacks Widevine L1 DRM certification. Other apps may only be available as direct APK downloads. Sideloading is the safe, straightforward solution for getting these apps onto your Dangbei projector.

What You Need

  • Your Dangbei projector connected to WiFi and powered on
  • A USB drive (formatted as FAT32) with APK files copied onto it, OR access to a file manager app on the projector
  • APK files downloaded from a trusted source (APKMirror.com is recommended for mainstream apps)
  • A Bluetooth keyboard (optional but makes typing much easier)

Step 1: Enable Unknown Sources

Android TV and Dangbei OS block APK installation by default to protect users. You need to allow it once:

  1. On the projector home screen, press the Home button and go to Settings.
  2. Navigate to Device Preferences > Security & Restrictions (on Android TV) or Settings > Privacy > Unknown Sources (on Dangbei OS).
  3. Enable the toggle for Unknown Sources or Install Unknown Apps.
  4. If prompted to choose which app can install APKs (Android 8+), grant permission to your file manager (for example, ES File Explorer or the built-in Files app).

Step 2: Transfer the APK to the Projector

Method A: USB Drive

  1. Download the APK file on your phone or computer from APKMirror or the app’s official site.
  2. Copy the APK to a USB drive formatted as FAT32.
  3. Insert the USB drive into the USB port on the Dangbei projector (check your model — some have USB-A ports on the side or back).
  4. Open the File Manager on the projector. Navigate to the USB drive folder.
  5. Find and select the APK file to begin installation.

Method B: ES File Explorer (Download Directly)

  1. Install ES File Explorer from the Google Play Store on the projector.
  2. Open ES File Explorer and use its built-in browser or FTP function to download APK files directly.
  3. Alternatively, use the built-in Downloader app (available on the Play Store) — type in the URL of the APK download page and it will handle the download and prompt installation automatically.

Method C: Send from Phone via Local Network

If ES File Explorer is installed, enable LAN sharing on the projector and use your phone’s file manager to push APK files over the local network. This avoids needing a USB drive entirely.

Step 3: Install the APK

Once you have located the APK file in the File Manager, tap on it. The Android package installer will launch showing the app name, required permissions, and an Install button. Tap Install and wait — installation typically takes 10–30 seconds. The app will appear in your launcher or app drawer once installed.

Step 4: Getting Netflix Working

Netflix via sideloaded APK will install on a Dangbei projector, but because the device lacks Widevine L1 certification, Netflix will either restrict content to low quality or display a “device not supported” error for some titles. The best workarounds are:

  • Cast from your phone: Open Netflix on your Android phone and use the Cast button to send video to the projector. Your phone handles the DRM, so you get HD quality.
  • Use a streaming stick: A Chromecast with Google TV or Fire TV Stick plugged into the projector’s HDMI port is Netflix-certified and supports full HD/4K.
  • Sideload the older Netflix APK: Some older versions of Netflix APK bypass the check. Search for Netflix APK version 8.x.x on APKMirror for the best chance of compatibility.

Apps That Work Well via Sideload on Dangbei

  • Disney+ Hotstar: Install via Play Store or sideload — works well on Dangbei
  • JioCinema: Available on Play Store; if not, sideload from the official JioCinema APK
  • Amazon Prime Video: Available in the Play Store on most Dangbei Android TV models
  • SonyLIV and ZEE5: Available via Play Store or sideload
  • Kodi: Excellent for local media libraries; download from kodi.tv directly
  • VLC and MX Player: Both available on Play Store; great for playing media from USB drives

Common Problems and Fixes

APK won’t install — “App not installed” error

This happens when the APK is for an incompatible CPU architecture or was downloaded incompletely. Re-download and choose the universal or arm64-v8a variant from APKMirror.

App crashes immediately after launch

The app may depend on Google Play Services that are not fully functional on the projector’s Android TV build. Try the Downloader + sideload method and ensure you have the latest Google Play Services installed via the Play Store.

Cannot find the File Manager on the projector

If there’s no built-in file manager, install the Downloader app from the Play Store first. Downloader is specifically designed for sideloading on Android TV devices and is the easiest way to install APKs without a USB drive.
