How to Connect Xiaomi Projector to WiFi: Step-by-Step Guide

Why WiFi Matters for Your Xiaomi Projector

A Xiaomi projector without a WiFi connection is just a screen — no streaming apps, no software updates, no wireless casting from your phone. Getting WiFi set up correctly is the first thing you should do after powering on the projector for the first time. This guide covers the initial connection, how to change networks later, the difference between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, and how to fix the most common connection problems.

What You Need

  • Your Xiaomi projector and remote control
  • Your home WiFi network name (SSID) and password
  • A router broadcasting on 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz (or both)
  • The projector within reasonable range of your router (under 10 metres ideally)

Step 1: Connect During First-Time Setup

When you power on a Xiaomi projector for the first time, it launches a setup wizard. After selecting your language, it will ask you to connect to WiFi. Use the remote to navigate the on-screen keyboard and select your network name from the list. Enter your password carefully — passwords are case-sensitive. Once the projector shows a checkmark or “Connected” status, tap Next to continue the setup.

If you do not connect during setup and skip this step, you can always connect later via Settings > Network > WiFi.

Step 2: Connect or Change Network After Setup

  1. Press the Home button on the remote to go to the main screen.
  2. Navigate to Settings (gear icon, usually in the top-right corner).
  3. Select Network, then WiFi.
  4. Make sure WiFi is toggled on. Your projector will scan for available networks.
  5. Select your network from the list and enter the password.
  6. Wait for the “Connected” confirmation — this usually takes 10–20 seconds.

Step 3: Choose Between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz

Most modern routers broadcast on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Here is how to decide which to use for your Xiaomi projector:

Band Best For Notes
2.4 GHz Longer range, walls in between Slower speeds; more interference from neighbours and appliances
5 GHz Higher speeds, same room Best for 4K streaming and screen mirroring; shorter range

If your projector is in the same room as the router, use 5 GHz for the fastest and most stable connection. If it is in a different room or separated by walls, 2.4 GHz will be more reliable. Note: some entry-level Xiaomi projectors only support 2.4 GHz — check your model’s spec sheet.

Step 4: Test the Connection

Once connected, open YouTube or the built-in browser on the projector and load any page. If it loads without issue, your WiFi connection is working correctly. If pages don’t load or streaming is choppy, proceed to the troubleshooting steps below.

Common WiFi Problems and Fixes

Projector keeps dropping WiFi connection

This is often caused by power-saving mode putting the WiFi adapter to sleep. Go to Settings > Device Preferences > Power > Sleep and set it to Never or increase the timeout. Also check that your router’s DHCP lease duration is not set too short.

WiFi network is visible but won’t connect

Double-check the password. Try forgetting the network and reconnecting: in WiFi settings, long-press the network name and select Forget Network, then reconnect. If you have a MAC address filter on your router, whitelist the projector’s MAC address (found in Settings > About > Status).

WiFi network is not showing in the list

If you have a hidden SSID, your network will not appear in the scan list. Tap Add Network and manually type the network name, security type, and password. If the network still doesn’t appear, restart both the projector and the router.

Slow streaming even with WiFi connected

Check your internet plan speed and test it on another device. If only the projector is slow, move it closer to the router or switch to 5 GHz. You can also try a WiFi extender or mesh node to improve signal strength in the room.

Tips for a Stable Connection

  • Avoid placing the projector behind or very close to a TV, metal surfaces, or microwave ovens — these cause interference.
  • Give your router a static IP lease for the projector to avoid DHCP conflicts.
  • Update your projector’s firmware regularly — WiFi stability is frequently improved in updates.
  • If you frequently cast from your phone, ensure both the phone and projector are on the same WiFi band (not one on 2.4 GHz and the other on 5 GHz).

Once WiFi is working, the next step is often to connect your phone for casting or to install additional apps.
