How to Connect Sony Projector to Phone

Sony’s VPL home cinema and office projectors support several ways to connect your Android or iPhone. Whether you want a lag-free wired connection for movie night or a wireless mirror for a quick presentation, there is a method that suits your setup. Here is everything you need to know.

What You Need

  • Sony VPL projector (VPL-HW, VPL-VW, VPL-PHZ, or similar)
  • Android phone or iPhone
  • For wired: USB-C to HDMI adapter (Android) or Lightning to Digital AV / USB-C to HDMI adapter (iPhone)
  • HDMI cable
  • For wireless: Wi-Fi network, or a streaming dongle such as Chromecast or Apple TV 4K

Method 1: HDMI Adapter (Wired — Best Quality)

  1. Plug the USB-C to HDMI adapter into your Android phone, or the appropriate Apple adapter into your iPhone.
  2. Connect the HDMI cable from the adapter to the Sony projector’s HDMI input port.
  3. Power on the projector and press Input on the Sony remote.
  4. Select the HDMI port you used (HDMI 1 or HDMI 2).
  5. Your phone screen will mirror on the projector automatically. iPhone may prompt you to trust the connection.

Method 2: Sony Screen Mirroring (Android)

Many Sony VPL projectors support Miracast-based Screen Mirroring natively.

  1. On the Sony projector, press Input and select Screen Mirroring.
  2. The projector will display a waiting screen with connection instructions.
  3. On your Android phone, swipe down and tap Smart View, Cast, or Wireless Display.
  4. Select the Sony projector from the device list.
  5. Accept the connection prompt on the projector if asked. Your Android screen will appear within seconds.

Method 3: Chromecast (Android & iPhone)

  1. Plug a Chromecast dongle into the Sony projector’s HDMI port and power it via USB.
  2. Set up the Chromecast using the Google Home app on your phone.
  3. Connect your phone and Chromecast to the same Wi-Fi network.
  4. On Android: open any Chromecast-supported app (YouTube, Netflix) and tap the Cast icon, or cast your entire screen via Google Home.
  5. On iPhone: use AirPlay-compatible apps or the Google Home app to cast content.

Method 4: Apple TV 4K (iPhone — AirPlay)

  1. Connect an Apple TV 4K to the Sony projector’s HDMI port.
  2. Ensure your iPhone and Apple TV are on the same Wi-Fi network.
  3. Swipe down on your iPhone to open Control Centre, tap Screen Mirroring, and select the Apple TV.
  4. Your iPhone screen will mirror to the projector with minimal lag.
