BenQ Projector Setup Guide: From Unboxing to First Use

A new BenQ projector out of the box can seem intimidating, but the initial setup takes under 30 minutes. Follow these steps to go from unboxing to a perfectly calibrated image on your wall or screen.

What You Need Before You Start

  • BenQ projector and included remote with batteries
  • Power cable
  • HDMI cable (not always included — check the box)
  • Source device: laptop, streaming stick, Blu-ray player, or gaming console
  • Projector screen or a clean, flat, white wall
  • Tape measure for throw distance calculation

Step 1: Choose Your Placement

BenQ projectors use a standard throw ratio. A 1.5:1 throw ratio means the projector must sit 1.5 m from the screen to produce a 1 m wide image. Use BenQ’s online throw distance calculator or the manual’s table to find the right distance for your desired screen size. Place the projector on a stable surface or ceiling-mount bracket centred with the screen.

Step 2: Unboxing and Physical Setup

  1. Remove the projector, remote, power cable, and documentation from the box.
  2. Remove the lens cap and store it safely.
  3. Adjust the tilt foot at the bottom of the projector to level the image on the wall.
  4. Connect the power cable and turn the projector on using the top panel or remote power button.

Step 3: Lens Focus and Zoom

  1. Point the projector at the screen and press the power button.
  2. Use the zoom ring (outer ring around the lens) to fill your screen with the projected image.
  3. Use the focus ring (inner ring) to sharpen the image until text appears crisp.
  4. If your model has optical zoom, dial it to get the correct image size before focusing.

Step 4: Keystone Correction

If the image appears trapezoidal (wider at top or bottom), use keystone correction. Press the Keystone button on the remote or navigate to Menu > Display > Keystone. Adjust until the image forms a perfect rectangle. Minimise keystone correction where possible — optical alignment (moving the projector) gives better picture quality than digital correction.

Step 5: Select Input and Connect Your Device

  1. Connect your source device via HDMI cable to the projector’s HDMI port.
  2. Press the Source button on the remote and select HDMI.
  3. The image from your device should now appear. If not, check the cable and the device’s display output settings.

Step 6: Choose a Colour Mode

BenQ projectors offer several picture presets. Access them via Menu > Picture > Picture Mode:

  • Cinema / Movie: Warm tones, accurate colour — best for films in a dark room.
  • Vivid: Boosted saturation — good for sports and bright rooms.
  • sRGB: Accurate colour for presentations and PC use.
  • User: Custom calibration for advanced users.

Step 7: Audio and Final Adjustments

  1. Set audio output on your source device to HDMI if using the projector’s built-in speaker.
  2. Adjust volume using the remote.
  3. For a better home theatre experience, connect a soundbar or receiver to your source device’s audio output.
  4. Run the BenQ auto-calibration if available on your model (newer BenQ models with ISF or HDR support).
