LED Night Lamp: Brightness, Wattage, Colour and Energy-Use Guide

An LED night lamp uses light-emitting diodes to provide low-level illumination with relatively low power consumption. LED technology is common in plug-in, rechargeable, sensor and decorative lamps, but not every product described as a night lamp is necessarily LED. Wattage does not equal brightness

Wattage tells you how much electrical power a lamp consumes. It does not directly tell you how bright the lamp looks. Two LED products with the same wattage can produce different light output because of LED efficiency, diffuser design, shade colour and direction.

When available, lumens are a better measure of total visible output. Even then, placement matters. A low-output lamp aimed at a pale wall can feel more useful than a brighter lamp hidden behind furniture. For night use, the goal is not maximum lumens but adequate orientation with minimal glare.

How bright should an LED night lamp be?

Choose brightness according to the task. A bedside comfort light can be very dim. A corridor lamp should reveal obstacles and level changes. A bathroom approach light should show the route without being installed in an unsafe splash area. A pooja-room lamp should help identify nearby objects without being confused with a diya or task light.

If the listing does not state lumens, review product photos cautiously. Images are often taken in a dark room with adjusted exposure. Customer reviews that mention brightness in a room similar to yours may be more useful than promotional images.

Warm white, cool white and coloured LEDs

Warm white light generally appears yellow or amber, while cool white appears bluer. Neutral white falls between them. Colour temperature is usually expressed in kelvin when the manufacturer provides it. Lower values tend to look warmer; higher values tend to look cooler.

Integrated LED or replaceable bulb?

An integrated LED is built into the product. It can make the lamp compact, but the light source may not be user-replaceable. Sensor LED night lamps

LED technology is often combined with motion or dusk-to-dawn sensors because it can switch on quickly and use relatively little power. Confirm whether the sensor detects movement, ambient darkness or both. A label such as “automatic” is not enough.

Rechargeable LED lamps can be useful during power cuts and for flexible placement. Compare battery capacity, stated runtime, charging time, charging connector and whether the battery is replaceable. Do not charge on bedding or under a pillow. Stop using a battery-powered lamp if the casing swells, leaks, cracks or becomes unusually hot.

Energy-use calculation

To estimate electricity use, multiply the lamp’s wattage by the number of hours used and divide by 1,000 to get kilowatt-hours. For example, a 2-watt lamp used for 10 hours consumes 0.02 kilowatt-hours in that period. Multiply by your electricity tariff for an estimated cost.

This is only an estimate. Actual consumption can vary with dimming, sensors, charging losses and product design. Do not market a lamp as “zero electricity” or “zero watt.”

Heat and ventilation

LEDs are efficient, but they still produce heat. The driver and enclosed body can warm during operation. Decorative shades should have the ventilation intended by the manufacturer. Never cover an operating lamp with fabric or paper to reduce brightness.

Unplug the product if it develops a burning smell, smoke, melting, severe flicker or unusual heat. A lamp that has fallen, cracked or become loose in the socket should be inspected or replaced.
