Video playing perfectly but no sound? This is one of the most common projector complaints, and it’s nearly always a settings or output issue rather than a hardware fault. Many projectors also have weak or no built-in speakers by design. Here’s how to track down the silence and fix it.
Common Causes of No Sound
- Audio output set to the wrong device
- The projector is muted or volume is at zero
- The projector has weak or no internal speakers
- HDMI ARC not enabled when using a soundbar or TV
- Bluetooth speaker connected but not selected as output
- The source device is sending audio elsewhere
Step-by-Step Fixes
- Check volume and mute: raise the projector volume and make sure it isn’t muted — then check the source device’s volume too.
- Set the audio output: in the projector’s sound settings, choose the correct output (internal speaker, HDMI ARC, Bluetooth, or 3.5mm).
- Check the source output: on a laptop, set the projector or HDMI as the default playback device in sound settings.
- Use external speakers: many projectors have tiny speakers — connect a Bluetooth or wired speaker for proper sound.
- Enable HDMI ARC: if using a soundbar or AV receiver, turn on ARC/CEC on both devices.
- Re-pair Bluetooth: if you paired a speaker but hear nothing, reselect it as the active audio output.
When the Projector Has No Speakers
Plenty of compact and business projectors ship with no usable speaker at all, so silence is expected. The simplest fix is a Bluetooth speaker or soundbar. If your projector lacks Bluetooth, use the 3.5mm headphone output or route sound through an HDMI ARC soundbar.
Prevention
- Decide on your audio setup when you install the projector.
- Keep a Bluetooth speaker paired and set as the default output.
- Use HDMI cables that carry audio (most do, but very old cables may not).
