Why Is My Refrigerator Not Cooling? Causes and Fixes

A refrigerator that is not cooling properly is one of the most common appliance complaints in Indian homes. The good news: most causes are straightforward and can be fixed at home without a technician. Here is a clear breakdown of every likely cause and the step-by-step fix.

Quick Answer

The most common reasons a refrigerator stops cooling are dirty condenser coils, a faulty door seal, the thermostat set too high, or the fridge being in demo mode. Try the fixes below before calling a technician.

Common Causes and Fixes

1. Dirty Condenser Coils

The condenser coils at the back or underside of your fridge release heat. When coated in dust and pet hair (extremely common in Indian homes), they cannot dissipate heat efficiently and the compressor overheats or cycles off early.

Fix: Unplug the fridge. Pull it away from the wall. Brush or vacuum the coils with a soft brush. Do this every 6 months.

2. Damaged Door Seal (Gasket)

A cracked or warped rubber door gasket lets warm air into the fridge constantly. The compressor runs non-stop trying to compensate, but temperatures never reach the set point.

Fix: Close the door on a piece of paper. If you can pull the paper out easily, the seal is failing. Clean the gasket with warm soapy water first — sometimes that restores the seal. If not, replace the gasket (₹400–₹1,200 depending on model).

3. Thermostat Set Too High

The temperature dial or digital setting may have been accidentally changed. Many fridges are set between 3 and 6 on a 1–7 dial — which is roughly 3°C–5°C for the fridge compartment.

Fix: Set the fridge to 3–4°C (or the mid-point on a numbered dial). Wait 4–6 hours for the temperature to stabilise.

4. Demo / Shop Mode Active (Samsung and LG)

Samsung and LG fridges come with a demo mode that keeps the lights and display on but disables the compressor. If your fridge was recently purchased or moved, check for “OF OF” (Samsung) or “O FF” on the display.

Fix: For Samsung, hold Fridge + Energy Saver for 3 seconds. For LG, hold Refrigerator + Ice Plus for 3 seconds. See also: Samsung Refrigerator Error Codes.

5. Evaporator Fan Not Running

The evaporator fan circulates cold air from the freezer into the fridge section. If it is blocked by ice (common in frost-free fridges that have failed their defrost cycle), the fridge compartment warms even if the freezer stays cold.

Fix: Listen near the freezer — if you hear no fan hum, unplug and manually defrost for 24 hours. If the fan still does not run after defrost, the motor needs replacement.

6. Fridge Overloaded or Placed Against the Wall

Packing a fridge too tightly blocks airflow between shelves. Placing it less than 5 cm from the wall prevents the condenser from releasing heat.

Fix: Remove excess items. Ensure at least 5–10 cm of clearance at the back and sides.

7. Compressor Not Starting

If the compressor is silent, the start relay or overload protector may have failed. See our detailed guide: Refrigerator Compressor Not Starting: What to Do.

Step-by-Step Diagnostic Process

  1. Check the temperature setting — is it set correctly?
  2. Check for demo mode — does the display show OF OF or O FF?
  3. Listen for the compressor — a low hum from the bottom-back means it is running
  4. Listen for the evaporator fan — open the fridge, you should hear airflow
  5. Inspect the door seal — paper test as described above
  6. Clean the condenser coils at the back
  7. Check for error codes on the display panel

Prevention Tips

  • Clean condenser coils every 6 months
  • Do not place hot food directly in the fridge
  • Ensure at least 5 cm clearance around the fridge
  • Check door seals annually

When to Call a Technician

  • Compressor is completely silent and warm
  • Fridge still does not cool after 24-hour manual defrost
  • Refrigerant leak suspected (hissing sound, oily residue near coils)
  • Error code on display that does not clear with reset
