A refrigerator makes some noise — that is completely normal. But when it starts humming loudly, rattling, buzzing, or clicking, it is worth understanding whether the sound is harmless or a sign of a developing fault. Here is how to diagnose every common refrigerator noise and what to do about it.
Quick Answer
Most refrigerator noises — humming, gurgling, clicking during defrost — are normal operation. Loud rattling is usually a loose drip tray or the fridge vibrating against a wall. Grinding or screeching sounds point to a fan motor that needs attention.
Normal Refrigerator Sounds
- Low steady hum: The compressor running — normal
- Gurgling or bubbling: Refrigerant circulating through coils — normal
- Clicking or popping: Plastic components expanding/contracting with temperature changes — normal
- Hissing during defrost: Water dripping on the defrost heater — normal
- Ice falling in the ice maker: A loud thud every few hours — normal
Abnormal Noises: Causes and Fixes
Loud Rattling or Vibrating
Cause: The fridge is not level, the drip tray underneath is loose, or it is touching the wall or cabinet.
Fix: Adjust the levelling feet so the fridge is slightly back-tilted (helps doors close). Pull the fridge away from the wall and neighbouring cabinets. Check and reseat the drip tray at the bottom.
Loud Humming (Louder Than Usual)
Cause: Dirty condenser coils force the compressor to work harder and run louder. Also common when the fridge is overstuffed.
Fix: Clean the condenser coils at the back/bottom. Remove excess items from the fridge. Ensure adequate ventilation gap.
Grinding or Screeching
Cause: The evaporator fan or condenser fan blade is hitting ice build-up or a foreign object (a dislodged wrapper, for example).
Fix: Unplug the fridge. Check the condenser fan at the back-bottom for obstructions. Manually defrost if ice is blocking the evaporator fan in the freezer. If the noise persists after defrost, the fan motor bearings are failing — replace the motor.
Knocking or Banging
Cause: The compressor is starting or stopping unevenly, often due to a failing start relay.
Fix: Remove the start relay (a small component plugged into the side of the compressor) and shake it — a rattling sound confirms it is faulty. A replacement relay costs ₹200–₹500 and is a simple plug-in swap.
Buzzing from Water Dispenser Area
Cause: The water inlet valve is trying to open but has low water pressure, or the supply line is kinked.
Fix: Check that the water supply valve behind the fridge is fully open. Check the filter — a clogged filter restricts flow and causes the valve solenoid to buzz. See: Refrigerator Water Dispenser Not Working.
Clicking Every Few Minutes
Cause: If the compressor tries to start, clicks, and then stops repeatedly, the overload protector is kicking in to protect the motor. This is a sign the compressor is overheating or the start capacitor has failed.
Fix: This requires a technician. Do not ignore repeated clicking — it can permanently damage the compressor.
Prevention Tips
- Clean condenser coils every 6 months
- Keep the fridge level and away from walls
- Do not overload shelves — allow airflow
- Check the drip tray annually
When to Call a Technician
- Repeated clicking (compressor failing to start)
- Grinding noise persists after defrost and obstruction check
- Loud banging accompanied by no cooling
