Resetting a Samsung refrigerator clears error codes, exits demo mode, and restores the control board to factory-default settings. There are three types of resets — a power reset (simplest), an error code clear, and a demo mode exit. This guide covers all three with model-specific steps.
When Should You Reset a Samsung Refrigerator?
- After a power outage — the display shows 88 88 or incorrect temperatures
- When an error code appears — 5E, 25E, PC ER, 1E etc.
- When the fridge is not cooling and the display shows OF OF or O FF (demo mode)
- After a service repair, to restore normal operation
- When the control panel is unresponsive
Reset Method 1: Power Reset (Works on All Models)
This is always the first reset to try. It is safe, cannot cause data loss, and clears most transient error codes.
- Unplug the refrigerator from the wall socket
- Wait 60 seconds (not less — the capacitors need time to discharge)
- Plug back in
- The display will run a self-check and return to normal operation
Reset Method 2: Exit Demo Mode (OF OF / O FF)
If your new Samsung fridge is not cooling and shows “OF OF” or “O FF”, it is in Shop/Demo mode. The compressor is disabled.
For Most Samsung Double-Door and Multi-Door Models:
- Press and hold Fridge + Energy Saver buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds
- The display will chime and show the temperature — cooling begins immediately
For Older Samsung Models:
- Press and hold Power Cool + Power Freeze for 3 seconds
- Or press and hold any two buttons on the panel for 5 seconds until the display changes

Reset Method 3: Forced Defrost Reset
When the 5E or 25E error code appears — indicating a defrost sensor or freezer sensor fault — forced defrost is the recommended first step.
- Press and hold Fridge + Energy Saver for 8 seconds (most models)
- The display will show “Fd” — forced defrost has started
- Place towels around the fridge base to catch melt water
- The cycle runs for 20–30 minutes, then the fridge resumes normal operation

Reset Method 4: Control Panel Reset (Child Lock)
If the panel buttons are unresponsive, the child lock may be activated.
- Press and hold the Child Lock button (or the lock icon) for 3 seconds
- The lock icon will disappear from the display
- Buttons are now active
After the Reset: What to Expect
- The display may show dashes (- -) for 30–60 minutes while the fridge cools down
- Temperature will take 4–6 hours to fully stabilise
- Do not adjust settings repeatedly during this period
- Set fridge to 3–4°C and freezer to -18°C as a starting point
When a Reset Is Not Enough
- If the same error code returns within 24 hours — the underlying component is faulty
- If the fridge does not cool even after exiting demo mode — check the compressor
- For persistent errors, call Samsung service: 1800-5-726-7864
