Where Does Detergent Go? Quick Answer
- Front-load washing machine: In the detergent drawer (the pull-out tray at the top-left). Use the compartment marked with a II or flower/arrow symbol for the main wash.
- Top-load washing machine: Directly into the drum before adding clothes — or use the detergent compartment if your model has one.
- Detergent pods/capsules: Always directly in the drum, placed at the back before adding clothes (both front and top loaders).
Understanding the Front-Loader Detergent Drawer
Pull the drawer out and you’ll see 2–3 compartments:
| Compartment | Label | What Goes Here | When to Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Left compartment | I or pre-wash symbol | Pre-wash detergent | Only if using the Pre-wash cycle for heavily soiled items |
| Middle / Main compartment | II or arrow/flower | Main wash detergent | Every wash — this is where your regular detergent goes |
| Right compartment | Flower symbol or ✿ | Fabric conditioner / softener | Optional — goes in every wash if you use fabric conditioner |
Note: Never fill compartment I unless you’ve selected a Pre-wash cycle. Detergent left in compartment I during a regular cycle won’t be dispensed at the right time — it sits unused.
Liquid vs. Powder Detergent: Does It Matter Where It Goes?
Powder detergent: Goes directly in the drawer compartment. The water flowing through the drawer dissolves and carries it into the drum.
Liquid detergent: Can go in the main wash compartment (II). Some liquid detergents come with a dosing ball that you place in the drum instead — check your detergent’s instructions.
Important: Never fill the fabric conditioner compartment with liquid detergent. The compartment is designed to dispense at a specific point in the rinse cycle — using it for detergent means the detergent enters at the wrong time.
Fabric Conditioner / Softener
Always add to the fabric conditioner compartment (the one with the flower symbol) — never directly into the drum. If you pour conditioner directly on clothes, it can leave stains. The drawer compartment is designed to release it during the final rinse, which is exactly when it needs to be added.
How much: Fill to the MAX line. Overfilling can cause siphoning (the conditioner drains out early instead of being held for the rinse).
Top-Load Washing Machines: Where Does Detergent Go?
Standard Top-Loaders (Most Indian Models)
Add detergent directly into the drum before adding clothes. This lets the detergent dissolve and distribute evenly as the drum fills with water. If you add detergent on top of clothes, it may not dissolve fully before the main wash begins.
Top-Loaders with Detergent Dispensers
Some newer top-load models (Samsung, LG, Whirlpool) have a detergent dispenser on the top rim of the drum or on the control panel. Add detergent here for automatic dispensing.
Top-Loaders: Where Does Fabric Conditioner Go?
Most top-loaders have a fabric conditioner compartment in the centre agitator cap or a separate dispenser on the rim. This holds the conditioner and releases it during the rinse cycle. If there’s no dispenser, add conditioner manually during the final rinse cycle (pause the machine, add it directly to the water, resume).
How Much Detergent to Use
Most people use too much detergent — it’s one of the most common washing machine mistakes. Excess detergent:
- Leaves residue on clothes (especially front-loaders)
- Causes excessive suds that trigger extra rinse cycles
- Builds up inside the drum and drawer over time
General guideline for a 7–8 kg load:
| Detergent Type | Amount for Normal Load |
|---|---|
| HE powder (front-load) | 1.5–2 tablespoons |
| HE liquid (front-load) | 20–30 ml (check cap markings) |
| Regular powder (top-load/semi) | 2–3 tablespoons |
| Pod / capsule | 1 pod per load |
Reduce the amount by 25–30% if: your load is small, clothes are lightly soiled, or you have soft water.
Keeping the Detergent Drawer Clean
The drawer collects detergent and conditioner residue over time, leading to mould, bad smells, and blockages that cause overflow leaks. Clean it monthly:
- Pull the drawer out completely (press the release tab).
- Rinse under warm running water.
- Use a toothbrush to scrub any residue from compartments and the housing.
- Allow to dry completely before reinserting.
