Washing Machine Water Inlet Valve: Symptoms, Testing and Replacement

What Is the Washing Machine Water Inlet Valve?

The water inlet valve is a solenoid-controlled valve that opens and closes to let water into the washing machine drum. When the control board signals “fill,” the solenoid opens the valve. Once the correct water level is reached, it closes. Most machines have one (cold water) or two inlet valves (hot and cold).

Signs of a Faulty Inlet Valve

Symptom Most Likely Cause
Machine shows IE/E1 error — won’t fill Solenoid failed or inlet filter clogged
Fills very slowly Partially blocked inlet filter screen
Water enters when machine is off Valve stuck open (debris on seat)
Leak at the back of the machine Cracked valve body or loose connection
Machine overfills Valve stuck open + water level sensor may also be faulty

Step 1: Check the Inlet Filter Mesh (Free Fix)

The filter screen inside the valve port traps sediment from the water supply. A clogged filter is the most common cause of slow-fill or no-fill problems — and it’s free to fix.

  1. Turn off the water supply tap. Unplug the machine.
  2. Disconnect the inlet hose from the machine (have a towel ready).
  3. Look inside the valve port — you’ll see a small mesh screen.
  4. Use needle-nose pliers to gently remove the screen.
  5. Clean under running water with a soft brush. If damaged, replace it (₹50–₹150).
  6. Reconnect and test.

Step 2: Test the Solenoid with a Multimeter

If the filter is clean but the problem persists, test the valve coil:

  1. Locate the valve at the back of the machine where the hose connects.
  2. Unplug the machine. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the valve.
  3. Set multimeter to ohms. Touch probes to the two terminals of the solenoid coil.
  4. A working solenoid reads 500–1,500 ohms. Open circuit (OL) or near-zero = failed solenoid, replace the valve.

Step 3: Replace the Inlet Valve

  1. Unplug machine. Turn off water. Pull machine away from the wall.
  2. Disconnect inlet hoses from the valve.
  3. Remove the rear or top panel (model-dependent, usually 4–6 screws).
  4. Photograph all wiring connections before disconnecting.
  5. Disconnect solenoid electrical connectors and internal hoses.
  6. Unscrew valve from the machine frame. Install new valve in reverse order.
  7. Restore water, run a test fill cycle before replacing panels.
