Toshiba Washing Machine Not Draining
If your Toshiba washing machine finishes the wash but leaves water sitting in the drum — or stops mid-cycle with water inside — the drain system has a blockage or fault. In most cases the fix is straightforward and does not require a technician: a blocked pump filter or a kinked drain hose accounts for the majority of Toshiba drainage failures.
Quick Answer
First check the drain filter (blocked lint and debris) and the drain hose (kinked or inserted too deeply). If those are clear, the drain pump may have failed and will need replacement.
Step-by-Step Fix
Step 1: Check the Drain Hose
- Pull the machine gently away from the wall and inspect the grey corrugated drain hose at the back.
- Check for any sharp kinks or bends that would restrict water flow.
- If the hose goes into a standpipe, ensure it is inserted no more than 15 cm deep — too deep creates a siphon effect that stops water from draining.
- The hose outlet should be between 60–90 cm above floor level.
Step 2: Clean the Pump Filter
On Toshiba front-loaders, the pump filter is located behind a small access panel at the bottom-right of the machine.
- Place a shallow tray and old towels in front of the panel to catch residual water.
- Open the panel and slowly unscrew the filter cap — water will flow out.
- Pull out the filter and clear away lint, hair, coins and any debris.
- Rinse the filter under running water.
- Check the pump impeller (the small plastic wheel behind the filter housing) — spin it with your finger to ensure it moves freely.
- Replace the filter, tighten the cap and run a drain cycle.
Step 3: Check for Excess Suds
Too much detergent creates excess foam that can fool the pressure sensor into thinking water is still present, preventing the drain pump from running. If you see foam in the drum when the machine should be draining:
- Run a rinse-only cycle without adding any detergent.
- Switch to a low-suds HE detergent and use the correct dosage going forward.
Step 4: Test the Drain Pump
If the filter and hose are clear but the machine still will not drain, the drain pump motor may have failed. Signs include a humming noise without any water movement during the drain phase. A technician will need to test the pump with a multimeter and replace it if faulty.
Prevention
- Clean the pump filter every 1–2 months — it is the single most effective way to prevent drainage faults.
- Always check pockets before loading — coins and clips are the most common cause of pump impeller damage.
- Learn how to clean the washing machine drum and filter properly.
- Use the correct detergent amount — see the detergent drawer markings on your model.

When to Call a Technician
Contact Toshiba service or a local appliance technician if the pump is confirmed faulty, if water is leaking from the filter housing, or if the machine displays a persistent drain error code that does not clear after cleaning the filter. Toshiba India support: 1800-200-8674.
