How to Stop a Washing Machine from Moving and Shaking

The problem

A washing machine that “walks” across the floor during the spin cycle is both alarming and damaging — it can pull on hoses, scratch the floor and wear out its own internal parts. The cause is almost always a combination of an uneven floor, feet that aren’t level, and loads that throw the drum off balance. Fixing it is a quick DIY job with no special tools.

Why a washing machine moves

  • Unlevel feet: if one foot is shorter, the machine rocks and creeps with every spin.
  • Slippery floor: smooth tiles or polished wood give the feet nothing to grip.
  • Unbalanced load: bunched-up laundry makes the drum lurch to one side.
  • Transit bolts left in: on a new machine, these must be removed (a different but related vibration cause).
  • Worn feet or missing pads: degraded rubber feet lose their grip.

Step-by-step: stopping the movement

  1. Level the machine. Place a spirit level on top. Loosen the lock nut on each adjustable foot, screw the foot up or down until the machine sits flat and doesn’t rock, then retighten the lock nut.
  2. Check all four feet are planted. Push down on each corner — there should be no wobble. Adjust until the machine is rock-solid.
  3. Fit anti-vibration pads. Place rubber anti-vibration pads or a single mat under the machine to grip the floor and absorb movement.
  4. Balance the load. Spread laundry evenly and avoid washing one heavy item (like a single rug or duvet) alone.
  5. Don’t overload. Leave space for clothes to tumble freely.
  6. Test on a fast spin with a balanced load to confirm it stays put.

How to prevent it

  • Re-check the levelling feet a couple of times a year.
  • Keep anti-vibration pads in place, especially on tile or wood.
  • Always balance and never overpack the drum.
  • On a new machine, remove the transit bolts before first use.

If the machine is noisy as well as moving, see why your washing machine is loud and vibrating. A walking machine can also struggle to spin properly, leaving clothes wet after the spin cycle.

When to call a technician

If the machine is level, padded and balanced but still lurches violently or makes a loud knocking, the internal suspension springs or shock absorbers may have failed. These dampen the drum’s movement, and replacing them is a job for an appliance technician.
