What Is a Washing Machine Agitator?
The agitator is the tall, finned post in the centre of a top-load washing machine drum. It moves back and forth during the wash cycle to push and pull clothes through the water, creating the mechanical action that cleans fabric. Not all top-loaders have one — high-efficiency (HE) top-loaders use an impeller (a low-profile disc) instead.
Why Would You Need to Remove the Agitator?
- Clothing is caught or tangled around the agitator and can’t be freed otherwise
- You’ve dropped something (sock, small garment, object) down below the agitator into the pump area
- The agitator is cracked, broken, or its fins are damaged and need replacing
- You need to access the drum centre bolt or water valve below it for other repairs
- Cleaning the agitator and the area beneath it (calcium buildup, mould)
Tools You’ll Need
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Socket wrench set (typically 7/16″ or 1/2″ socket, depending on brand)
- Needle-nose pliers (for some models)
- Towel or mat to kneel on
Method 1: Agitator Secured by a Bolt (Most Common)
Most top-load agitators are held in place by a bolt hidden under the softener dispenser cap at the top of the agitator.
- Unplug the machine and turn off the water supply.
- Open the lid and look at the top of the agitator. There will be a fabric softener dispenser cap or a plastic cover.
- Pry off the cap with a flat-head screwdriver (insert at the edge, twist gently). Set the cap aside.
- Inside you’ll see a large bolt — typically 7/16″ or 1/2″. Remove it with a socket wrench (turn counterclockwise).
- Grip the agitator firmly with both hands. Pull straight upward — it may require steady force if it’s been in place for years. Rock it gently side to side as you pull if it’s stuck.
- Once removed, place it on a towel outside the machine.
Method 2: Agitator Secured by Clips (Some Models)
Some agitators (especially Whirlpool and Maytag designs) are held by locking tabs rather than a bolt.
- Unplug the machine.
- Look at the base of the agitator where it meets the drum. You’ll see plastic tabs or clips.
- Using a flat-head screwdriver, depress each clip inward while lifting the agitator upward.
- Work around the agitator — there are typically 3–4 clips spaced evenly.
- With all clips released, pull the agitator straight up.
Two-Piece Agitators (Top Section Separate)
Many agitators have two sections — an upper agitator cap/softener dispenser and a lower agitator body. The upper section is held by a ratchet mechanism that only allows it to turn in one direction during normal operation.
To remove the upper section: grip firmly and pull straight up — it just lifts off. The lower section is removed as described above (bolt or clips).
After Removal: What to Check
- Look inside the drum beneath where the agitator sat — retrieve any lost items
- Inspect the agitator itself for cracks, broken fins, or worn ratchet mechanism inside
- Clean calcium/detergent buildup from both the agitator post and the drum coupling below it
- Check the drum drive coupling for wear if the machine has been noisy
Reinstalling the Agitator
- Align the agitator’s base with the drive shaft splines in the drum (there’s usually a keyway to ensure correct alignment).
- Push firmly straight down until it seats fully.
- Replace and tighten the bolt (if present) — hand-tight plus a quarter turn with the socket wrench. Don’t overtighten.
- Snap the fabric softener cap back into place.
- Restore water supply, plug in, and run a short test cycle.
