Installing a washing machine is something most people can do themselves in 30–45 minutes with basic tools. This guide covers the complete process — from unpacking to the first test cycle — and applies to all major brands including Samsung, LG, IFB, Whirlpool, Bosch, Haier, and Godrej.
What You Need Before You Start
- Adjustable spanner or pliers
- Spirit level
- Old towels or a tray (for water spillage)
- The installation kit that comes with the machine (inlet hose, drain hose, transit bolt key)
- Access to a cold water tap with a standard threaded outlet
- A standpipe or sink nearby for the drain hose
- A dedicated 15A earthed socket
Step 1: Remove Transit Bolts
Transit bolts lock the drum during transport. Failing to remove them before use causes severe vibration, noise, and damage to the machine.
- Lay the machine on its side or keep it upright — do not lay a front-loader fully flat.
- Use the plastic key (supplied with the machine) or a spanner to unscrew the 3–4 transit bolts from the rear panel.
- Pull out each bolt with its plastic spacer.
- Store them safely — you’ll need them if you ever move the machine.
- Fill the bolt holes with the plastic caps provided.
Step 2: Connect the Water Inlet Hose
- Locate the water inlet on the back of the machine — it’s a threaded port, usually marked with a blue label or arrow.
- Screw the inlet hose coupling onto the machine port by hand — do not overtighten, which can crack the coupling.
- Connect the other end to your water tap. Most modern taps use a standard 3/4-inch thread.
- Turn on the tap and check for leaks at both connections. Tighten by hand + a quarter turn with a spanner if needed.
For front-load machines, some brands (like IFB) supply an Aqua Energie inline filter. Fit this between the tap and the hose — follow the directional arrow printed on the filter body.
Step 3: Connect the Drain Hose
- The drain hose exits from the back of the machine — it’s usually pre-attached at the machine end.
- Secure the other end in a standpipe (a vertical pipe fixed to the wall) or hook it over the edge of a sink using the plastic U-bend clip supplied with the machine.
- The drain hose end must be at minimum 60 cm and maximum 100 cm above floor level — too low causes siphoning (continuous draining); too high strains the pump.
- Do not push the hose too deeply into the standpipe — 15 cm depth maximum to prevent siphoning.
Step 4: Level the Machine
- Place the machine in its final position. Do not install on carpet — use a solid, flat surface.
- Place a spirit level on top of the machine — check front-to-back and side-to-side.
- Adjust the four front feet (turn clockwise to lower, anti-clockwise to raise) until the bubble is centred.
- Tighten the lock nut on each foot once the level is correct — this prevents the foot from moving during vibration.
- Rock the machine by hand — all four corners should be firm with no rocking.
Step 5: Check Electrical Connection
- Use a dedicated 15A or 20A earthed socket — do not share with other high-current appliances
- Never use an extension cord or multi-plug adaptor
- Ensure the socket is accessible (not behind the machine) so you can unplug in an emergency
- The socket should be at least 150 cm from the machine to keep the cable clear of water
Step 6: Run the First Drum Clean Cycle
Before adding any laundry, run a Drum Clean (or equivalent) cycle with an empty drum. This removes factory residues, packaging debris, and any oils from assembly. Add a drum cleaning tablet or 100 ml of liquid bleach to the drum, select the Drum Clean programme, and press Start. The cycle takes 60–90 minutes depending on the brand.

| Drain hose at correct height (60–100 cm) | Required |
| Machine level — no rocking | Required |
| Dedicated earthed socket — no extension cord | Required |
