Bosch Washing Machine Not Starting: Causes and Fixes

A Bosch washing machine that won’t start is one of the most common complaints, and in most cases the cause is a simple setting or minor issue you can fix in minutes. Work through these checks in order before calling a service technician.

Quick Checks First

  • Power: Is the machine plugged in? Is the socket switched on? Try plugging another device into the same socket to confirm power is working.
  • Door: Is the door fully closed? Push it firmly until you hear/feel a click. Bosch front-loaders will not start if the door is not latched.
  • Water tap: Is the inlet tap turned on fully? The machine detects water supply absence and will not start if water cannot fill.
  • Delay Start: Has Delay Start been accidentally activated? Check the display — if it shows a countdown, press the Delay Start button to cancel, then press Start again.

Step-by-Step Fixes

1. Child Lock is Activated

If the control panel is unresponsive, child lock is the most likely cause. Look for the key icon or lock symbol on the display. To deactivate, press and hold the Child Lock button (or the two-button combination specified in your manual) for 3–5 seconds until the lock icon disappears. See our full guide on how to turn off child lock on a washing machine.

2. Door Latch Not Engaging

Inspect the door latch (the hook on the door) and the catch (the slot on the body). If there is lint, debris, or a small item of clothing blocking the catch, clear it. If the door seal (gasket) is bulging outward, push it back into its groove so the door can close fully. If the latch mechanism is visibly broken or cracked, it requires replacement — call Bosch service.

3. Power Supply or Fuse Issue

Check the plug fuse if your socket is a fused type. Replace the fuse (13A) and try again. If there is an MCB or circuit breaker associated with that socket, reset it. Avoid using extension cords — Bosch washing machines should be plugged directly into a wall socket rated for 15A or higher.

4. Water Supply Not Detected

Turn off the machine, check the inlet hose for kinks, and ensure the tap is fully open. Also check the small mesh filter inside the inlet hose coupling — sediment can block it. Remove the hose from the machine, clean the filter, reattach, and try again.

5. Error Code on Display

If the machine displays an error code before refusing to start, the error must be cleared first.

Error Code Meaning Fix
E17 Water not filling Check tap, inlet hose, filter — see E17 fix guide
E3 Door not locked Close door firmly; check latch — see E3 fix guide
E23 Drain pump fault Clean pump filter; check drain hose
F21 NTC temperature sensor fault Requires technician

How to Reset a Bosch Washing Machine

Turn the programme dial to the Off position. Wait 30 seconds. Turn it back to a programme and press Start. If the machine still does not respond, unplug it from the wall socket, wait 2 minutes, and plug it back in. This clears temporary electronic faults.

When to Call a Technician

  • The machine makes a clicking or buzzing sound when Start is pressed but does not run — the motor or capacitor may be faulty
  • An error code reappears immediately after being cleared
  • The door is physically jammed closed and won’t open even after power cycling
  • No display and no response after checking all power connections
