How to Connect a Fire TV Stick to a Projector

An Amazon Fire TV Stick is the easiest way to turn any projector into a smart streaming machine — even a basic one with no apps of its own. It plugs straight into the HDMI port and gives you Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube, and more on the big screen. Here’s how to set it up properly, including how to fix the common audio issue.

What You Will Need

  • An Amazon Fire TV Stick (any model)
  • A projector with a spare HDMI port
  • The Fire Stick’s USB power cable and adapter
  • A WiFi connection
  • A Bluetooth speaker or soundbar (recommended, since projector speakers are weak)

Step 1: Plug In the Fire Stick

  1. Insert the Fire TV Stick into an HDMI port on the projector.
  2. If space is tight behind a ceiling mount, use the supplied HDMI extender.

Step 2: Power the Stick

  1. Connect the Fire Stick’s micro-USB/USB-C cable to its power adapter and a wall socket.
  2. If your projector has a powered USB port, you can try powering it from there — but a wall adapter is more reliable.

Step 3: Select the Input and Set Up

  1. Turn on the projector and press Source, then choose the matching HDMI port.
  2. Follow the Fire TV setup wizard: connect to WiFi and sign in with your Amazon account.
  3. Install Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube, and any other apps you want.

Step 4: Sort Out the Audio

This is the step most people miss. Many projectors have tiny or no speakers, so route the sound out:

  • Bluetooth: pair a Bluetooth speaker directly to the Fire Stick (Settings > Controllers & Bluetooth Devices).
  • Wired: use the projector’s 3.5mm output to a speaker.
  • Soundbar: connect via HDMI ARC for the best result.

Troubleshooting

  • No picture: you’re on the wrong HDMI input — cycle through the sources.
  • Stick won’t power on: use the wall adapter, not the projector’s USB port.
  • Netflix black screen: the Fire Stick handles HDCP itself, so this is usually a cable issue — reseat or swap the HDMI cable.
