Why Is My AC Not Cooling? Causes and Fixes

AC Not Cooling: Quick Answer

If your air conditioner is running but not cooling the room, the most common causes are a dirty air filter, a refrigerant leak, incorrect temperature settings, or a clogged condenser coil on the outdoor unit. Most of these you can diagnose and fix at home in under an hour.

Common Causes of AC Not Cooling

  • Dirty or clogged air filter — the single most common cause; blocks airflow over the evaporator coil
  • Low refrigerant (gas leak) — the AC runs but cannot absorb enough heat
  • Wrong temperature setting — thermostat set too high, or the AC is in fan-only or dry mode
  • Clogged condenser coil — outdoor unit fins blocked with dust, reducing heat rejection
  • Frozen evaporator coil — ice build-up due to restricted airflow or low refrigerant
  • Undersized AC for the room — the unit cannot handle the heat load
  • Sun exposure and heat gain — direct sunlight, poor insulation, or too many heat sources in the room
  • Faulty thermostat or PCB — electronic control issue

Step-by-Step Diagnosis and Fix

Step 1: Check the Settings

Make sure the remote is set to “Cool” mode (not Fan or Dry), the temperature is set at least 3–4°C below the current room temperature, and the fan speed is not at the lowest setting. This simple check fixes the issue surprisingly often.

Step 2: Clean the Air Filter

A filter clogged with dust is the most common cause of poor cooling. Open the indoor unit’s front panel, slide out the filters, rinse them under running water, and allow them to dry completely before reinserting. Do this every 2–3 weeks during heavy use.

Step 3: Check for Ice on the Indoor Unit

Look through the front grille or along the copper pipe for ice. If ice is present, turn the AC off and set it to fan-only mode for 45–60 minutes to thaw the coil. Icing is caused by a dirty filter (fixed above) or low refrigerant.

Step 4: Clean the Outdoor Unit

Ensure the outdoor unit is free of dust, leaves, and debris. Gently clean the aluminium fins with a soft brush. Make sure there is at least 50 cm of clear space around the unit on all sides. In hot Indian summers, a shaded outdoor unit runs more efficiently.

Step 5: Check the Refrigerant Level

If the filter is clean, there is no ice, and the outdoor unit is clean but cooling is still poor, the refrigerant may be low. This requires a certified AC technician — do not attempt to add refrigerant yourself.

Prevention Tips

  • Clean the air filter every 2–3 weeks during peak summer.
  • Get the AC professionally serviced once a year before summer.
  • Keep doors and windows closed while the AC is running.
  • Use curtains or blinds to reduce direct sunlight into the room.

When to Call a Technician

  • Cooling does not improve after filter cleaning and outdoor unit cleaning.
  • Ice forms on the copper pipes repeatedly.
  • You hear hissing sounds near the copper pipe joints — possible refrigerant leak.
  • The AC displays an error code.
