Haier Washing Machine Not Starting
A Haier washing machine that will not turn on or start a cycle is usually caused by something simple — a power supply issue, the door not properly closed, child lock, or a delay start setting accidentally activated. Work through the checks below in order before calling a technician.
Quick Answer
Check the power supply and plug, confirm the door is firmly closed, check for child lock, and verify no delay start has been set. If the display is completely blank, the issue is almost certainly power-related.
Causes and Step-by-Step Fixes
1. No Power / Blank Display
- Check the plug is fully inserted and the wall socket is switched on.
- Test the socket with another appliance.
- Check your home’s MCB (circuit breaker) — if it has tripped, reset it. If it trips again immediately when the machine is plugged in, there is a fault inside the machine requiring a technician.
- Check the power cord for any visible damage or burn marks.
2. Door Not Closed Properly
Haier front-loaders will not start if the door interlock does not engage. The machine may show a door error on the display.
- Open the door and check for trapped clothing or laundry caught in the rubber seal.
- Close the door firmly until you hear a click.
- If the door latch feels loose or broken, the interlock assembly needs replacement.
3. Child Lock Active
Child lock disables all buttons. On most Haier models, hold the relevant button combination (check your manual — usually holding two buttons simultaneously for 3–5 seconds) to deactivate it. A lock icon on the display confirms child lock is on. See our guide on how to turn off child lock on washing machines.
4. Delay Start Accidentally Set
If the machine powers on but does not begin washing, a delay start programme may have been set. Check the display for a timer countdown. Press and hold the Start/Pause button to cancel the delay, then press Start again.
5. Water Supply Not Connected
Haier machines will not start the wash cycle if the water inlet tap is closed or the inlet hose is kinked. Check that the tap behind the machine is fully open and the hose has no sharp bends.
6. Control Board or Display Fault
If the machine powers on (display lights up) but pressing Start does nothing after you have ruled out child lock and delay start, the control board or a button may have failed. This requires a technician.
Prevention
- Keep the area around the machine dry — moisture near the socket or plug can cause connection problems.
- Clean the door seal regularly to prevent it hardening and not engaging properly. Read how to clean the drum and filter.
- Refer to our Haier not draining guide if the machine starts but stops during the wash due to drainage issues.
When to Call a Technician
Contact Haier service (1860-200-9999) if the circuit breaker trips every time the machine is plugged in, if the display shows a fault code that does not clear, or if the machine makes unusual sounds when you try to start it. Do not attempt to open the machine casing yourself.
