Samsung Washing Machine 4C and 4E Error Codes: Causes and Fixes

What Does the 4C or 4E Error Mean on a Samsung Washing Machine?

4C (also displayed as 4E on older models) means the Samsung washing machine is not receiving water. Both codes indicate the same fault — the machine started a cycle but couldn’t detect sufficient water entering within the expected time.

4C is the newer code used on most Samsung machines from 2015 onwards. 4E is the older equivalent — same fault, different display format.

Common Causes of Samsung 4C / 4E Error

1. Water Supply Tap Not Open (Most Common — Check First)

The simplest explanation: the water supply tap behind the machine is turned off or only partially open. This accounts for roughly 40% of 4C errors reported by users.

Fix: Turn the tap fully counterclockwise (open). Restart the cycle.

2. Kinked or Frozen Inlet Hose

The rubber inlet hose connecting the water tap to the machine can develop a kink — especially after the machine has been moved or pushed against the wall.

Fix: Pull the machine away from the wall. Check the entire length of the inlet hose for bends or kinks. Straighten and restart.

3. Clogged Inlet Filter Mesh

A fine mesh filter inside the valve inlet port catches sediment from the water supply. Over time (especially with hard water) this clogs and restricts water flow below the threshold the machine can detect.

Fix:

  1. Turn off the water tap. Unplug the machine.
  2. Disconnect the inlet hose from the back of the machine.
  3. Look inside the machine’s inlet port — you’ll see the mesh screen.
  4. Remove with needle-nose pliers, rinse under running water, brush gently.
  5. Reinstall, reconnect hose, and test.

4. Water Pressure Too Low

Samsung washing machines require a minimum water pressure of approximately 0.5 bar (50 kPa). If your building has low water pressure during peak hours or if you’re on a high floor, the machine may not fill fast enough.

Diagnose: Hold a bucket under the tap the machine is connected to and measure — it should fill at at least 10 litres per minute for adequate pressure.

Fix: Schedule washes during low-demand hours (early morning). A pressure booster pump (₹3,000–₹8,000) can solve chronic low-pressure issues.

5. Faulty Water Inlet Valve

If the solenoid valve that opens to let water in has failed electrically, the machine will see no water entering even if the tap is fully open and the filter is clean.

Test: With multimeter on ohms, test the solenoid coil — should read 500–1,500 ohms. An open circuit (OL) means the solenoid has failed.

Fix: Replace the inlet valve. Samsung inlet valves cost ₹600–₹1,500 for parts. Service centre: 1800 5 726 7864.

6. Faulty Water Level Sensor (Pressure Switch)

Less common, but the pressure switch that tells the control board how much water is in the drum can fail — causing the machine to “think” the drum is already full even when it’s empty, or to incorrectly flag a no-water fault.

Fix: Requires a service engineer. The pressure switch and the small rubber tube connecting it to the drum should be inspected.

7. Error Triggered After Power Interruption

A power cut mid-fill can sometimes cause the machine to show 4C when power is restored, even if water supply is fine — it’s a false error from the interrupted cycle state.

Fix: Perform a power reset. Press and hold the Power button for 5 seconds, then unplug for 60 seconds. Plug back in and restart the cycle.

Samsung 4C2 Error: Hot Water Supply

If your machine shows 4C2, this specifically indicates a problem with the hot water supply (for machines with a hot water inlet). In most Indian homes that only connect cold water to the washing machine, this error doesn’t apply. Check that both hoses are connected to the correct inlets if you have both hot and cold connected.

Step-by-Step 4C Error Diagnosis

  1. ✓ Is the water tap behind the machine fully open?
  2. ✓ Is the inlet hose kinked or flattened?
  3. ✓ Is there a water supply at all (check if other taps in the house work)?
  4. ✓ Is the inlet filter mesh clean?
  5. ✓ Is water pressure adequate?
  6. If all above are fine: test inlet valve with multimeter
  7. If valve is fine: service engineer required (pressure switch / control board)

When to Call Samsung Service

If you’ve checked all the above and the error persists, the machine needs a qualified technician. Samsung service number: 1800 5 726 7864. Have the model number ready — it’s on the label inside the door frame.
